DEMO REVIEW: Ringarë – Sorrow Befell

Ambient Black Metal titan RINGARE are back with a new demo of dungeon-dwelling atmospherics, out via Iron Bonehead Productions on June 15th.

Stunning synths and grisly riffs start our journey off with cymbals chiming, creating a huge and immersive atmospheric monolith that one can immediately become lost in. Howled vocals complete the mix with a profoundly enjoyable and almost instrumental use of the voice which perfectly suits the gritty yet transcendental riffs and synths. There is a surprising groove from the drums which adds a really unique dynamic to the cascades of guitars, keys and vocals. Truly a magnificent return from one of my favourite Ambient Black Metal projects who conjure a perfect balance of aggression, melody and atmospherics. It does not take long to see this is a marvellous demo to be mesmerised by.

Continuing through glistening passages of Black Metal excellence, the ancient and mystical Ringarë soundscapes grow and intertwine with each other to make for a fascinating and heavily nuanced listen. Aside from the glorious, battle-ready music, there is melancholy on this demo that is gorgeously emotive and relatable, each section of music clearly being thoroughly put together with care and precision. This is not just a demo, this a medieval journey through loss, warfare and introspection, the band have not just provided a soundtrack but a provocative piece of sonic art that is immense in every sense.

The hammering drums of the more aggressive sections meet a tempest of riffs and maniacal vocals to deliver utter carnage amidst the more serene concoctions, there is no denying the huge diversity of offerings that Ringarë allows us to behold. Most impressive is the impeccable manner in which it all comes together to create a far bigger, more expansive picture. Crushing, beautiful and overall just utterly astounding, this demo is packed with so many twists and unpredictable moments that there is infinite replay value and nuance to be found in the ancient sounds. Truly a magical experience from start to finish.

Ringarë are back, on top form. The musical conjurations showcased here give a fine example of why Ringarë is one of the very best Ambient Black Metal acts. Endlessly growing, warping and marching forward to conquer new territory, this demo is just as impressive as the previous album, EP and demos from them. An absolutely magnificent demo of resplendent Black Metal. totally unmissable for lovers of Black Metal with plenty of atmospheric prowess and experimentation. -9/10
