ALBUM REVIEW: Astriferous – The Lower Levels Of Sentience

Sepulchral Death Metallers ASTRIFEROUS are back to follow their killer demo up with a brand new mini album. Set for release via Me Saco Un Ojo Records, Desert Wasteland Productions and Pulverised Records on August 7th.

Ambience starts off the record with a simple but effective peaceful sampling before storms of guttural riffs, hammering drums and brutal vocals launch into fruition. A thick tar of Death Metal spews forth with a cavernous and invasive onslaught, churning putridity and pulverising all in its path. Doomy riffs and crashing cymbals break up the intensity of the assault with creepy monoliths of atmosphere, this is clearly some well-balanced material with tons of texture. Firing back into a cascade of offal, the meaty guitars, chunky bass and relentless drums give a perfect backdrop to the vomitous vocal performance, delivering a hellish inferno of masterfully dark Death Metal morbidity. Convulsing with a dismally gruesome charnel energy, the tracks continue in a unique and memorable vein of eerie, slimy extremity that is ravenously evil.

Putridity continues to fall from the visceral soundscapes of Astriferous as we see more monstrously grisly songwriting develop into more eerie and aggressive territories, balancing perfectly to create a storm of ferocious yet expansive Death Metal delicacies to feast upon. Rancid riffs and upbeat drums kick through the skull, into the brain matter with a vicious slew of growls, continuing to permeate the air with a thick, odious sense of dread and conjuring hideous monstrosities in their sound, creating a vision to go with it. This is some brooding and dank material that will certainly satisfy the cravings of maniacal Death Metal lovers with a penchant for the more disgusting, cavernous and volatile reaches of the genres underbelly. Utterly magnificent in the most vile possible way.

Following a fantastically malignant demo, Astriferous deliver the same high quality Death Metal depravity on this mini-album. Totally unhinged and spewing with darkness, this dripping cacophony of death will certainly be a worthwhile and immersive listen for those who dare to venture the lower levels of sentience. -8.5/10
