ZATYR are here with their debut EP of pure Heavy Metal. Out now via Dying Victims Productions.
Hammering drums and glistening guitars with cutting bass drive forth a powerfully melodic, dancing array of blistering classic Heavy Metal. Surging on with huge walls of instrumental attack, vocals soon ensue to add more maniacal 80s fury to the mix. With a savagely old school feel, Zatyr present a rather dark and brooding variant of Heavy Metal that really hits hard with speeding aggression and anthemic verses that make the EP immediately easy to get into. Soaring lead guitars only accentuate the charm of the record with the pounding excellence always present.
Packed with bite and exciting twists, each of the songs brings something massive to the table with viciously enjoyable grooves, epic melodies and masterfully catchy songwriting all round. There is the occasional touch (primarily in the vocals) of Extreme Metal and also some punky drum work coming in here and there to give a diverse and more unique approach to the bands work, something that definitely works at giving the music an unkempt rage and volatility. While offering a massive sound, this doesn’t feel overly polished, it feels honest. Clearly passionate maniacs doing what they love rather than some cheap nostalgia band.
This is a really killer EP that adds a darker side to the “NWOTHM” movement and conjures something rather unique and unpredictable. It is no secret that Sweden has been a forerunner in rekindling the old school Heavy Metal sound, Zatyr are no exception to the excellence they produce. Definitely an EP for all Metal lovers to enjoy. -8/10
