ALBUM REVIEW: Cosmic Putrefaction – The Horizons Towards Which Splendour Withers

The second album of otherworldly Death Metal solo project COSMIC PUTREFACTION is here. Promising a unique and splendidly estranged brand of brutality. Set for release via I, Voidhanger Records and Caligari Records on May 22nd.

Ferocious drums, expansive riffs and monstrous vocals dive right into a cosmic array of splendidly depraved Death Metal soundscapes. Punishing and guttural, the convulsive rhythmic battery and monolithic atmospherics delve through charnel, cosmic and discordant realms of brutality with a magnificently diverse and malignant approach. Elevating and progressing, there is not a second on this album that is wasted, forever moving forth with doomy morbidity or visceral assaults, entwined with wonderful musical prowess. The diversity not only gives us killer variety, but allows each element of the music to truly grow into some manner of Eldritch monstrosity with the twisted song structures developed so magnificently.

Barbaric and aggressive but with so much more to offer, Cosmic Putrefaction have an astoundingly savage approach while conjuring dark apparitions with their slaughtering atmospheric excellence. Like a putrid rain of depraved cosmic energy, this record will consume you with its odious, pungent and eerie concoctions. Both vocally and instrumentally memorable, there is a ferociously unique and otherworldly approach to the songwriting that is suitably experimental but never obnoxious, utilising a huge skill set while staying fierce rather than showy. This allows a six track storm of total cosmic fury to envelope you and grasp the attention of those who dare to listen.

The blackened touches of the album further the darker side of things, in the same vein we get some doomy flourishes to add texture. However all of this only accentuates the focal and precise murk of their Death Metal splendour. Volatile twists and turns always unravelling new paths of dissonance and aggressive barbarity, there is certainly not a moment on the record which is safe from explosive experimentation. This is a totally warped and maniacal affair which is simply crushing while using technicality to their advantage, never crossing into the trap of letting it ruin the atmosphere or feel of the album.

Utterly cavernous and packed with malice, the second offering of Cosmic Putrefaction is a monolithic endeavour to behold. Unrelenting, caustic and with some of the tightest musical abilities, this thing packs a hideously heavy punch. Each piece spews a frankly unwieldy brand of disdainful Death Metal that does not just sound like the abyss, but shows the abyss to you. -9/10
