ALBUM REVIEW: Convocation – Ashes Coalesce

CONVOCATION are back with their second album of brooding, Funeral Doom tinged Death Metal. Set for release via Everlasting Spew Records on July 3rd.

Eerie soundscapes begin things in an ambient manner with a tangible feeling of dread before storming guitars and pounding drums deliver a monolith of instrumental ferocity alongside droning, guttural vocals. A crushingly heavy tonality and timbre to the glisteningly depraved music of Convocation re-introduces them with a gorgeously rounded yet devastatingly brutal approach. Melodically twisted guitars bring the Finnish Death-Doom morbidity into the fold with such gruesome melancholy, bitter and vicious. This is clearly going to be as loathing and scolding as it is insightful and introspectively dark.

Monstrously atmospheric with creepy riffs and diverse drum work accompanied by a fantastic variety of vocals (though mainly inhumanly low gutturals) which altogether makes for a textured and volatile listen with so much emotive maturity in the songwriting to make for a truly haunting listen. The sheer brutality of the musicianship alone makes for a magnificent Death Metal album, but the dreary Doom Metal touches played in such a tasteful manner really add something special. Much like on their first record, Convocation have found a wonderful balance of these genres to create a chilling yet violent sound.

Punishingly despairing and cruelly malignant, Convocation have conjured another  firestorm of emotionally and sonically devastating Death-Doom. Packed with otherworldly atmospherics, pounding onslaughts and a massive sounding production to convey all of the nuance and brilliance within the songwriting, this is truly a fantastic opus. Each of the four songs are tied together with profoundly beautiful progressions while standing strong in their own right too. A masterful approach has clearly been utilised to allow so much beauty and ferocity to spew forth from each track, something that will not go unnoticed by those who discover this underground slab of excellence.

Convocation have followed a marvellous debut with an equally epic second record. Clearly the band have a focal nature when it comes to only including their best ideas to create a huge, thoughtful and killer blend of Death-Doom craftsmanship. Spectral, memorable and thought-provoking, fans of Death Metal and Doom Metal alike should be immediately flocking to listen to the miasma emanating from this album. -8.5/10
