ALBUM REVIEW: Dauþuz – Grubenfall 1727

German Black Metallers Dauþuz are back with a new mini album of mine-exploring extremity. Set for release via Amor Fati Productions on June 26th.

Glistening acoustic melodies start our journey with a pristine soundscapes of folk-tinged ambience and mournful singing. Tension builds with a natural, radiant growth that showcases a gorgeously minimalistic musical approach. Grisly blackened riffs storm in with cascading cymbal crashes, firing us into a volatile and emotive atmospheric assault. The melancholy tinged guitars, visceral drums and diverse vocals immediately hit hard with the excellence of true German Black Metal clearly present. Dauþuz have a unique sound, bordering on atmospheric and depressive but retaining all of the qualities of more traditional Black Metal, presented in a contemporary and exciting way.

With mesmerising guitars and drums conjuring a stunning foundation and some truly maniacal vocals, this is an incredibly tasteful record with each of the three songs offering a forlorn yet vanquishing display of wonderfully captivating Black Metal. Sonically fierce yet utterly beautiful to listen to, Dauþuz give us the best of both worlds in relevance to the more atmospheric side of things, never feeling work or overly reliant on anything but their killer songwriting abilities. Clearly the process of constructing this album was a thorough one with no detail overlooked. There is not a wasted moment or idea, giving us a short and vocal yet expansively complete feeling experience.

The blend of folky melodics and more sombre riffing gives a juxtaposition that works incredibly well to convey a wide array of emotions. Excitement, dread, anguish and vitriol are all conjured to life in this tempest of rampaging Black Metal. Though beautiful in many ways, there is a twisted and dangerous side to Dauþuz’s sound that certainly comes through with total strength and ferocity. There is absolutely and categorically no way that one can deny the magnificent texturing and stringing together of so many components in such an efficient and effective way.

Catchy, resplendent and with monoliths of ambience, it is very easy to fall in love with this record from very early on while the boundless nuances of the duo offer plenty to come back for, exploring further the mines of Black Metal. Allow Dauþuz to cascade forth their dark and stunning concoctions, lovers of Atmospheric Black Metal must not miss out on this record. -8/10
