ALBUM REVIEW: Kryptamok – Verisaarna

Finnish Black Metal project KRYPTAMOK has its debut album set to unleash, a journey of atmospherics and savagery lies in wait. Set for release via Purity Through Fire on May 30th.

A devastating storm of ravenous riffs, hammering drum assaults and morbid screeches drive for a ferocious Black Metal tempest with a cold atmosphere and riveting songwriting. Untamed aggression festers with a viciously old school approach to their brand of Black Metal, swathed in the pure Finnish icy sound that is a defining hallmark of their Black Metal scene. Equally iconic are the more melancholic sections which coupled with the overall groove and obliterating tempos of the record give it some killer dynamics, as do the hauntingly medieval synths.

Continuing in the same vein that they set out in, Kryptamok unleash some of the most fierce Black Metal traditionalism of recent times. With scorn and bitterly harsh instrumentals and vocals, this is exactly how Black Metal felt in the 90s, with a raw danger present in the bands sound to ward off those who are not dedicated to the macabre arts. Crushing, cold and catastrophically dark, this is chilling but in a manner less revolved around ambience and far more around the harsh wintery feel of Finnish Black Metal, this material hits hard with its wonderfully textured decimation.

Within the blastbeats and hellfire-summoning riffs there is plenty of melody and skilful musicianship that allows the album to grow and intertwine with synths in a natural way that does not feel weak. These fantastic instrumentals work gorgeously with the barbarity of the vocals to create an unrelenting utopia of all things sacrilegious. Battle-hardened soundscapes of pure blackened mastery is exactly what we hear for the duration of the record and it is certainly done exceedingly well with brooding, aggressive and discomforting atmospherics and astonishingly visceral musicianship.

A truly visceral conquest of epic proportions. Kryptamok are certainly a band who keep the old school Black Metal flame burning with utmost disdain for contemporary nuance, delivering a much more stripped back and caustic assault of the senses. Truly an unholy and deeply ritualistic recording of pure hatred, anguish and atmospheric prowess. -8/10
