EP REVIEW: Paingiver – Deorum Mortis

Texas Death Metallers PAINGIVER have their debut offering in the form of an EP of doomy morbidity. Set for release via Desert Wasteland Productions on May 15th.

Eerie samples begin our journey into the macabre with effective darkness. Doomy guitars and drums pound into fruition with melodically tinged, monolithic riffs and hammered fills to give a monstrously huge soundscape of pure old school death. Spectral and bleak, this is some mystical Death Metal that builds into a ferocious snarling cacophony with blastbeats and thrashy riffs, joined by guttural vocals. Cascading forth with more melody and dripping with ichor, Paingiver has a remarkably diverse sound in this short EP that delivers all the grit of Death Metal with a textured and grimly dark approach.

Cavernous, spewing with creepy sounds, this EP is devastatingly heavy, not just for a first effort. This is hopefully a taste for an album to come or further material, as these four pieces as astonishing. Wonderfully murky production and such eerily concocted instrumentals give the listener something that will appeal for fans of bands like Spectral Voice, Krypts and Convocation. Truly a magnificent blend of visceral old school Death Metal and brooding Doom Metal, Paingiver have a totally massive sound that is as odiously wretched in some parts as it is profoundly gorgeous in others.

A masterfully sludgy debut EP that shows boundless promise and some absolutely brilliant Death-Doom Metal packed with fantastic riffs, killer drums and demonic vocals. Shrouded in atmosphere in instrumental skill, these guys have made an incredibly strong first move that I am certain could lead to massive expansion on their already crushing sound. Do not miss out on this juggernaut of vicious, morbid Death Metal excellence. -8/10
