DEMO REVIEW: Death Pulsation – Demo

Sweden has quite the history of death metal excellence. Recently Death Pulsation released their first demo tape on Caligari Records with an emphasis on evil, raw and cult sounding savagery that I had to spread the word about…

A short introduction gives way to volcanic riffing and eruptions of mangled vocals atop abrasively violent drums. All of the key elements to a maelstrom of morbidity coming to sweep you into the abyss. Harkening back to the volatile sounds of Necrovore, Sadistic Intent, Morbid Angel and Possessed; Death Pulsation play an archaic and evil vein of death metal madness that is likenable to current underground stalwarts such as Omegavortex, Hexorcist or Degial. This style is one riddled with maniacal playing, cryptic visuals and inaccessible sonics. Their raw pummelling onslaught is demonic and introduces you to a vengeful and malicious band who will undoubtedly pull in real fiends of the genres obscurest corners demanding a purer death metal. Each churning instrumental pulsation has a convulsive and disquieting feeling to it as the possessed vocals continually spew venomous furore. Equally gripping is the sense of dynamics which fly from storms of aggression to more groove-laded, yet equally intense, barrages. The unpredictable and unwieldy nature of these three songs makes them truly exhilarating. A strong start from Death Pulsation.

Continuing in their scornful metallic attack, the songs never rest; offering layers of merciless and ever-shifting sepulchral torments. This is exactly what I would hope for from an underground demo tape, charnel and ferocious as possible to truly punish the listener with the real ancient death metal spirit. Injecting some blackened and thrashing elements into their melting pot of barbaric death metal ensures despite relying solely on archaic styles of metal; the sound is one of their own all the same. Tethered to the haunting and mystical elements of underground evilness, Death Pulsation feels like something more than just another “old school” band trying to ape their heroes. Truly an impeccable first demo that delivers total carnage. I cannot wait to hear what comes next and until then, this will be a regular listen.

Only death is real… Death Pulsation show exactly what they intend to do from their very first demo: demolish all softness, progression and modernity in death metal with their unholy and wild brand of possessed sadism. After many listens both for this review and for my own displeasure, I find it retains that exciting and feral sense of almost flying off the tracks which is impressive. The primal pounding coupled with intricately savage musicianship ensures a palpably violent and listen from start to end. Its short nature demands you to really actively engage and the explosive result is one you will keep coming back to.

Rating: 8.5 out of 10.
