ALBUM REVIEW: Revenge – Violation.Strife.Abominate

25 years into their gloried, revered and feared career, Canadian War Metal violators Revenge unleash their seventh full length album. Out now via Season Of Mist Underground Activists.

Venomously chomping at the bit, scornful guitars and malicious vocals rip into life atop bursts of frantic drumming mayhem. Instantly the Revenge formula of total devastation and blasphemy is recognisable and ruthless as ever. Much like on the last few records a strong sense of groove interrupts the more frenzied moments and gives the songs this pounding sense of fury which contrasts and accentuates the bestial nature of the music perfectly. Each hammering second ensures the start of this record impacts you with the bands full force, like a boot to the face. J. Read’s vocals and drumming are as utterly evil as ever while Vermin’s stringed onslaughts perfectly add lacerating wounds atop the hammer-blows of percussive might. A sonic declaration to the abhorrent has been made and shows no sign of giving respite anytime soon.

Hearing those slower riffs which drag your skull against the pavement alongside some of the faster and more crazed moments the band is known for is a supreme balance for me. Regardless of tempo or approach, everything this band does can be described in one word: punishing. Of course that may not appeal to the masses and surely it was never meant to, which is another favourable facet of these barbarians. They spit on those who do not stand for their intolerant blend of Blackened Death Metal triumph rather than beg for adoration from a fickle mass. Revenge were, are and always will be champions of the underground maniacs and that will always be respectable to those who get it. Anyways, back to the music. At its core, these songs continually grind and pummel only the most inhospitable audible terrains from start to end but with a massive production that allows each infectious burst of warfare to be truly felt. With as close to variety as the band will ever tread, these tracks definitely slaughter.

Still imbued with the rage of Blasphemy, Conqueror and other early gods of war; Revenge continues to challenge the ears of your average Black Metal fan with something truly abhorrent. Purging all weakness from the spirit, this martial opus is definitely another triumph from the band, whose disdainful discography has never once strayed from the path they set out on. Until the end you will be held in perpetual bewilderment by the whiplash grooving volatility and supreme chaos of this record which does not falter for a second from the deliverance of absolute armageddon. Pumping adrenaline through the veins until you go berserk, Revenge will bring out the maniacal force within those who appreciate their passionate musical artillery and destroy those who do not. From some of their strongest riffs to date and an unwieldy performance behind the kit from J. Read and of course those demonic vocals; the band are still as savage as ever and show no signs of relenting…

Rabid and furious as ever, this animalistic opus of satanic fury shows Revenge has never softened. A merciless and sadistic listen from start to end that is restless and hostile ’til the last. By now you should know the drill with this band, either you will revel in the militant punishment on show or run from its corporeal flagellations that shall be inflicted on all weaklings in proximity. If you seek a destructive and malignant album, there really aren’t many bands who can offer better than Revenge. No pity, no compromise, no remorse.

Rating: 8 out of 10.
