EP REVIEW: Evoker – Evil Torment

Australia’s EVOKER are back to follow their demo with a debut EP of thrashing Death Metal morbidity. Out via Blood Harvest Records on May 29th.

Barren soundscapes begin our journey which morph into huge building riffs and drums, creating a monolithic old school Death Metal assault with thrashing ferocity soon ensuing. The macabre violence of the riffs and blastbeats are soon joined by visceral vocals and soaring leads, harkening back to the sounds of bands like Possessed and Vader with a masterfully dark and violent onslaught. Tense and morbid, the sounds of Evoker are wonderfully morbid and harsh with a frantic volatility that is immensely captivating.

Continuing in the barbaric vein that they set out in, the musicianship is incredibly tight but with a raw aggression that with the occasional well-placed doomy riff has tons of texture to allow the savagery to hit even harder. Speeding through cataclysmic passages of pure Death Metal ecstasy, each song hurls us into more furious extremity with unrelenting brilliance. Ravaging songwriting and a filthily old school production gives Evoker all the tools they need to create an huge and addictive sound that feels totally genuine. There is nothing pretentious or faltering about this obnoxiously brutal material.

Scolding darkness and fearsome putridity spew forth with the high-octane approach that remains a constant throughout the record. With little over twenty minutes, Evoker manage to decimate all in their path six pieces of totally killer, magnificent and hateful Death Metal. Each second is utterly rammed with ferocity and passionately speeding instrumentals and vocals to conjure a storm of Extreme Metal that is totally magnificent. Monstrously aggressive, to the point and unwavering in their approach, this is pure morbid Death Metal with no regard for modern nuance, giving us a spearhead of classic belligerent hostility.

Surrender to the violence of Evoker, it is a must for fans of the very earlier Death Metal. Grave-crawling grooves and war-like assaults give a focal and unfathomably enjoyable slab of total severity. Repugnantly heavy and insanely intense, this is a huge EP that is hopefully the start of more from these Australian barbarians. -8/10
