ALBUM REVIEW: Sepulchral Curse – Only Ashes Remain

Following two EPs, Finnish Death Metallers SEPULCHRAL CURSE have their debut full length offering ready to be unleashed. Set for release via Transcending Obscurity Records on July 31st.

Wasting no time, the whole band launches into a cavernous display of monstrous riffs and monolith blastbeats, conjuring a ferocious storm of Death Metal barbarity for the guttural vocals to ensue and spew violence upon. Stomping grooves and doomy sections entwine with eerie, charnel passages to create superb atmospherics while the riveting aggression certainly does not subside. Melodic guitars and pounding drums continue to delve further into a dark and brooding display of extremity with utter brilliance.

Unrelenting and astonishingly bleak while profoundly heavy, Sepulchral Curse continue in their visceral and anguishing blend of Death Metal with doomy and blackened touches coming through in the ambience. Soaring lead guitars add more melody to the convulsive rhythms while the riffs and drums warp into morbid soundscapes, all accompanied by a fantastically diverse vocal performance. Finnish Death Metal has always been known for its uniquely monstrously heavy yet profoundly atmospheric approach, Sepulchral Curse deliver exactly this and more.

Grooving, masterful and creepy Death Metal at its best is what we get from these Finnish maniacs. Crawling with macabre energies, this is some freakishly intense material. Dripping with odious ooze, the fetid instrumentals and vocals continually launch forth a savage concoction of putridity with malice and precision. This is a huge sounding record with a tight and masterfully old school production to encapsulate the thundering Death Metal onslaught, really completing the package of maddening brutality.

Sepulchral Curse have delivered a gorgeously and magnificently crushing debut album. Foaming at the mouth with barbaric gruesomeness and cavernous sounds, there is atmosphere to spare with no lack of blasting, relentless assaults in wonderful harmony. Whether drawing out eerie doom-laden passages or storming through total sonic annihilation, the record keeps everything concise (despite some songs being rather long) and interesting with their memorable blend of death. Not only a promising debut, this just a fantastic Death Metal record with haunting songwriting abilities utilised to their full extent with a marvellous execution. Do not miss this tome of ferocity. -9/10
