EP REVIEW: Eremit – Desert Of Ghouls

German Doom Metal heavyweights EREMIT are back with a new EP of monolithic riff-craft. Set for release via Transcending Obscurity Records on July 17th.

Fuzzy guitars and cymbals bring in an upheaving slew of riffs that are clearly being held back to unleash something ferocious as they build alongside the weird drums and feedback. Pounding forth, the full band devastate with their ridiculously heavy, crunchy blend of marvellous musicianship that after their debut album is definitely recognisable. With plenty of drive, both on the guitars and from the bands performance, this is certainly a crushing sound. Howling, screamed vocals complete the mix for some added extremity over the hypnotic, grooving rhythmic assault.

A battering of drums and fuzz-laden riffs continues alongside these eerie vocals to deliver a catatonically possessed state of Doom Metal ecstasy. With a primal approach to the songwriting giving an ancient feeling to the music, this is certainly going to be adored by fans of bands like Conan, Electric Wizard and the like with a monolith of churning, gloriously heavy riffs. Punishing and mighty, Eremit deliver a fantastic two track follow up to their debut album which follows on exactly where they left off.

The second track dissipates into tranquil, ambient guitars and simplistic drums, allowing momentum to rebuild beautifully. This stunning atmosphere grows back into a mutating Doom Metal onslaught but it takes its time to really breathe life into the EP and make for a volatile and impressive listen. Haunting, chilling and dark but with plenty of lively cascades of brutality, there is no mistaking the impeccable songwriting skills here.

Do not let the fact this only two songs fool you into thinking it is a short release, it pulls in at twenty two decimating minutes of furiously visceral and headbang-inducing Doom Metal brilliance. This is certainly one that all fuzz-loving maniacs will adore as Eremit totally nail their viciously excellent slab of doom into your skull. Absolutely fantastic. -8/10
