DEMO REVIEW: Drottinn – Í Helgum Dýrðar Ljóma

DROTTINN is an Icelandic Death Metal band featuring members of Svartidaudi and Misthyrming. This new project is something of an enigma, only being released on tape and with no digital version coupled with limited band information, making for a mysterious release. The demo is out now via Terratur Possessions.

Grisly riffs and pounding drums churn out ritualistic Death Metal with a ferocity of extreme magnitude while melodic leads briefly add a haunting touch within these opening bars. The howled maniacal vocals complete the raw onslaught of morbidity for a visceral and untamed blend of crushing deathly soundscapes. This certainly is some unhinged Death Metal. The devastating blend of putrid riffs, hammered drums and snarled vocals gives a violent and ferociously feral display of all things truly Death Metal.

Macabre and dismally dark, this isn’t lame Death Metal trying to chug out low notes or a manufactured sound, this is violence incarnate, played by barbaric Icelandic Black Metal musicians who clearly take to Death Metal just as naturally. These three pieces of music on the debut demo are truly unforgiving and memorable slabs of unholy and vitriolic musicianship delivered in a magnificent fashion. Dissonant, savage and totally ravenous, this release is occultist brutality at its best.

If you get a chance to hear this mighty tome of morbid and gruesome Death Metal excellence, do not miss it. Truly an astonishing debut release that while obscure, certainly deserves a wider respect for its devastating blows of rupturing, bellowing disdain. With a diversely experimental and unpredictable nature, the volatility is just as exceedingly exciting as the sheer heaviness. Once more, do not ignore Drottinn, they deserve your attention. -9/10
