ALBUM REVIEW: Bezwering – Aan De Wormen Overgeleverd

Following a single demo last year, BEZWERING have returned with a full length debut of Dutch Black Metal extremities. Set for release via Van Records on April 24th.

Grisly guitars churn in with cymbal chimes, bellowing forth a rich and dark atmospheric with thick bass punching through the mix, there is a definite ritualistic ambience within this material, that can be said from the very onset. Building riffs and snappy drums grow into a march of destructive malice with some dissonant touches to add flare. The insanely groovy pace of the record gets you hooked from very early on with some utterly ferocious songwriting and insanely skilful musicianship. Heinously howled vocals complete the assault with just as much vicious aggression as the instrumental sections.

Bezwering have a really interesting blend of traditional Black Metal with more experimental nuances in their discordant marching grooves that makes for a superb listen. With a gorgeous production that really allows all of the bands morbid conjurations to spring to life, this ravaging inferno of majestic abominations if total unhinged in all of its glory. Convulsively lively and untamed, this doomy cascade of excellence is a punishing yet stunning listen throughout. The Norwegian hooks are definitely an influence on this band but these are developed in a far more unique manner than most to create a twisted and disturbing soundscape of riveting creativity.

While experimental, there is a familiarity to Bezwering’s approach that will certainly appeal to all Black Metal fans while giving them something really special. The clean singing offers a similar occultist vibrancy to Root while the doom-laden Black Metal could as easily be compared to Darkthrone as Goatlord or Uada or Root, depending on the section you happen to listening to, definitely a hard band to place which is a really good sign of this being memorable material. Crushing, obliterating and intense, this record is somehow both claustrophobic and sparse with a seemingly endless range of diverse ideas that are delivered in a vitriolic display of pure Black Metal aggression with some magnificent intricacies that will only be discovered from listening again and again.

Not only is this a fantastic debut album but generally a marvellous piece of art that certainly should be explored by only the open minded who are ready to hear classic Black Metal with new life breathed into it through masterful songwriting progressions and daunting ritualistic sombreness that is as hauntingly atmospheric in parts as it is barbaric and savage in others. Truly a wonderful record to behold and an esoteric journey into some mystical new Black Metal oddities. -8.5/10
