DEMO REVIEW: Burial – Presence From The Beyond

Back in November 2019 BURIAL put out a new demo, following their “The Forgotten” EP which was one of my favourite short releases of 2019. Although I reviewed their earlier EP, somehow this second demo never got reviewed despite me being aware of it, which I shall rectify now. This slab of Swedish style Death Metal (from Italy) is out now via Dismal Fate Records.

Mysterious soundscapes start the two piece demo off to a horrifyingly atmospheric and eerie beginning. Crusty HM-2 riffs, pounding drums and gruesomely snarled vocals bring the Lovecraftian Death Metal assault in with a hammering cascade of putrid grooves and ferocious aggression. Burial are one of those bands who use the HM-2 to their favour to accentuate already crushing riffs rather than relying too heavily on it to provide their sound. With Dismal Fate’s own Hannes pummelling drum hits to punctate these gnarly, odious guitars, a crushing instrumental section is set.

Vocally, the rupturing growls are hideously gruesome with eldritch lyrics being spewed carefully over the buzzsaw guitars and devastating drums to offer a complete and visceral display of mighty Death Metal brilliance. Aside from obliterating brutality we get some ambient, drawn-out doomy sections that fire forth a charnel ambience violently, giving headroom to rebuild the thunderous roar and crawl through some mid-tempo slime. These guys deliver some of the meatiest and most well varied material one could hope for in only two songs (though one of these is ten minutes).

Much like “The Forgotten”, this new demo is a fierce and scathing slab of utterly magnificent Death Metal blending Swedish chainsaw attacks, eerie Finnish Death-Doom and creating a totally new rotten experience. If you prefer your raspy grooves with some atmosphere, then Burial have the balance nailed. Truly an impeccable demo from one of the underground Death Metal worlds best kept secrets. -9/10
