A good Heavy Metal show in Norwich has sadly become something of a rarity in the last few years but thankfully classic Heavy Metallers Grand Magus and Wolf have teamed up to bring their double dose of pure soaring Metal madness to our fine rural city.
Wolf dive right into a speeding assault of massive NWOBHM style bangers. Their set is pretty evenly split with the first half showcasing tracks from their ferocious new record (which was reviewed here too) and the second half being more well known fan favourites such as “Speed On” and “Skullcrusher”. Despite the disheartening news of the rest of the European tour being cancelled Wolf play a blinding set of pure Heavy Metal nostalgia brilliantly and really bring something magical to the stage with their pure Judas Priest, Accept and Iron Maiden worshipping mastery. A truly impeccable and perfectly suitable support band for this show, it’s always a pleasure to see Wolf, this is definitely not my first and hopefully not my last time. Skulls were definitely crushed by the glorious power of Wolf.
Grand Magus after a rather long stage intro begin their pummelling grooves and contagious hooks with just as much energy, passion and fury as their fellow Swedes in Wolf. With inhumanly catchy songs that get everyone pounding their fists and chanting along, Grand Magus always feel like a really well-driven force that works gorgeously in a live setting with a responsive crowd. As is the case with Wolf, the recent cancellations are no doubt a big disheartenment for the bands but they soldier on and crush Norwich with the might hammer of the north. A pure spectacle of punishingly fun live material which is played superbly, proving Grand Magus can take a massive blow and still be an excellent live act that should never be missed. A totally killer show of ravaging Swedish Heavy Metal brilliance.
