ALBUM REVIEW: Duivel – Tirades Uit De Hel

After a single EP in 2019, DUIVEL unleash their debut full length of Black Metal majesties via Van Records on April 3rd. This promises to be some uniquely revolting and provocative material from a volatile band. Let us see what lies ahead…

Feedback and grisly raw guitars dive into scathing atmospherics before blastbeats and malicious vocals quickly chime in with utmost ferocity. The band waste no time in delivering total aural disdain and a discordantly ambient blend of memorable riffing and drum patterns for the disconcerting blend of macabre Black Metal delights to envelope the listener with. Subtle synth lines are used gorgeously to perpetuate the reverberate and icily drenching waves of malevolence with a hypnotic like state being incurred from the barbaric yet profoundly well-written musical brilliance. With excellent and utterly extreme orchestration from the cascading guitar assaults to the unrelenting drums but also inclusive of the blistering leads and howling screeches, there is everything one could hope for in a Black Metal release but not just this, there is a unique, memorable and tormenting amount of dissonant ideas that rekindle the idea of the genres evolution, offering something relevant and that will stand the test of time.

This is not an easy record to listen to, it is vicariously hateful, spewing forth the scoldingly morbid and devilish ideas of the band in a package of terrifyingly magnificent musical excellency. Howling through charnel passages of pure malevolent, ambient and psychotic sonic upheaval, this album will tear you out of your comfort zone and keep you entranced in it’s stunning yet unhinged soundscapes for its thirty-four minute running time. With the stylistic choices, aesthetics and production, I feel this shorter length suits the record well, it has breathing space and grows with fluidity and transcendence while never becoming overly repetitive or losing impact.

With a gorgeously sinister combination of traditional and contemporary Black Metal, there is no lack of satisfaction from either perspective. Expect conjurations of beings one should not encounter, but be grateful, for this album delivers them in a most fantastic manner with spectral Black Metal that is beyond marvellous. An obliterating affair of vomitous extremity that will shake all in its wake and glisten in its own revulsion, leaving only dilapidation and discomfort… -9/10
