Going back to October 2019, Australian Death-Doom Metallers CARCINOID dropped their debut album. Released via Memento Mori Records, Blood Harvest Records and Headsplit Records. Time for some rancid grooves.
Sci-Fi style cosmic synths bring in the album with a really cool 80s Horror undertone adding to the atmosphere. Storming upbeat riffs and cutting drums along with bellowed guttural vocals drop into superb grooves and morbid crawling mid-tempo assaults. The violent stench of truly amazing Death Metal immediately fills the ear as these monstrously heavy macabre musicians drive out a pummelling blend of viciously gruesome extremity. The gurgling vocals over swampy guitars and thunderous drum patterns is not far from the likes of Undergang with a convulsion of disgusting rhythmic blows that forcefully drag the listener into its doomy cavernous soundscapes. This is perfect Death Metal, there are visceral blastbeats and storming riffs which are balanced gorgeously with vomitous slower crawls through rotten layers of bass-heavy groove. This fetid blend is one I consider to be the ideal Death Metal sound and Carcinoid deliver it to perfection with a nasty sense of impending dread and absolutely crushing instrumental prowess. Devastatingly hard-hitting with a roaring cacophony of savage riffs, brutal drums and snarling vocals, this is one of the most putridly excellent Death Metal albums of the last year. The ferociously monolithic drudge and rapid onslaughts of fierce blasting brutality. I am certainly kicking myself for taking a couple months to check it out. Whiplash grooves make this perfect headbanger fuel as you are pulled into the bands dungeon of horrors with astonishing finesse, raw disdain and masterful songwriting. A well-paced and exciting listen from start to end with plenty of diversification in structure and tempo to keep things fresh. This is not only a brilliant first full length but a memorable and ludicrously magnificent piece of Death Metal that will satisfy the morbid maniacs who stumble across it for many years to come. A true marrow-melting, skull-stomping, bone-crushing Death Metal masterpiece. -9/10
