Norwegian / UK Black Metallers THE DEATHTRIP are back with their new full length album, out now via Svart Records and Profound Lore Records.
Ambient riffs discordantly chime into an unhingingly dark atmosphere, taking us into something doomy and morbidly drive from the get-go. Old school Black Metal groove comes in and immediately rekindles my love for the Norwegian spin on the genre that is so uniquely recognisable and enticing yet produced by a mainly British collective of artists. The raw rasp of cathartic instrumentals hits hard with a disturbing melancholy balanced only with poised aggression and some touches of melody, perfectly suited to the screeching banshee-like vocals that ensue. A howling void of despair is what this record offers and does so magnificently with plenty of familiarity in the musical prowess but also a tastefully refreshing a new take on a classic sound that I find to be really interesting. Plentiful avant-garde flourishes add to the mesmerisingly chaotic and inhuman feel of the music but without overstepping their line or crossing into anything overly progressive, keeping that stripped-back and raw feeling of Black Metal close to the heart of their craft. This is definitely some brilliant new material and worth a listen for those wishing Black Metal went into new and untamed ritualistic directions with gorgeously nuanced elements that truly envelope the listener throughout. With some finesse and honing of the songwriting, I can only see this project growing into a far superior territory and moving upwards. A monstrous and haunting second album. -7.5/10
