ALBUM REVIEW: Sunn O))) – Life Metal

Here is another belated and short review from a legendary band, this time the Drone Doom Metal heavyweights SUNN O))) with their brand new opus “Life Metal” which is out now via Southern Lord.

With droning, ambient guitars that draw in beautifully, soaked in fuzz, this album immediately gets the meditative mood of pure Doom Metal prowess and excellency flowing through your speakers. The release has some catatonic riffs as one would hope from Sunn O))) that drone out purely melancholic and blissfully tranquil soundscapes, conjuring up images that match the cosmic artwork. A supernova of doomy noise is clearly the goal, that is surpassed with their brilliantly unique music. For me Sunn O))) is definitely the perfect band for introspection and relaxation, this album really delivering the goods with its tasteful amplifier churning outputs. While there is not a lot that has changed within the bands sounds, it is a certainly welcome and haunting addition that shall certainly please Doom Metal lovers and amp nerds alike, both categories I can proudly fall into. The use of female spoken word on the opening song really accentuated the eeriness yet beauty that follows with all 4 tracks providing an excellency of droning concoctions that will certainly satisfy the rabid appetite of drone lovers. -8/10
