ALBUM REVIEW: Possessed – Revelations Of Oblivion

Here I am doing a belated and very short review to share my thoughts on the new album of POSSESSED, a legendary pioneer of Death Metal that has been awaited for over 30 years. Out now via Nuclear Blast Records.

The album drives in with full force, giving plenty of well-produced and catchy, grooving, thrashing guitar riffs, maniacal vocals and hellish blastbeats that conjure up the pure 80s spirit immediately when the lines between Thrash Metal and Death Metal were very much blurred. The huge drum fills throughout are mixed nicely among the relentless riffing massacre and butchering howls of the vocals. The first thing I noticed was how it seems the band picked up where they left off, with the album seeming like a perfect 3rd chapter to follow the only 2 full lengths they ever recorded. For those expecting the legendary band to have progressed, they will be disappointed. For the rest of us who just wanted another absolutely killer slab of true extremity from the Heavy Metal heroes, this album serves that purpose beautifully. There is a nice variety in tempo with some mid-pace grooving crawls breaking up the relentless barrages of total classic Extreme Metal warfare which adds to the character of the album beautifully. Overall, I think such a monumental event as a new Possessed album should not be overlooked, hence me deciding to write this, thusly everyone should be picking this up. Catastrophically brutal, fast and fun tunes throughout that make for a brilliantly savage summertime record of headbanging fury. -8/10
