Following my belated and summarised review of the new Sinmara album, I am also doing the same for the new debut of Gardsghastr. Out now via Profound Lore Records.
Gardsghastr bring a blistering, astonishing and refreshing take on Symphonic Black Metal that is punishingly intense while shrouded in beauty and magic. With soaring guitars, blasting drums, screamed vocals and hypnotic synths that all work in unison to create this wall of piercingly dark and intimidating Black Metal that feels old school. The songwriting keeps you on your toes with high-speed assaults but plenty of grooves and sections that even border on tranquil. A mystifying and fantastic album that truly conjures up an immersive experience with it concoction of fascinating and strange instrumental work and howls. There is an intrusive and penetrative style of production the complements the intimidatingly harsh and raw yet gorgeously rich assaults and intervals alike. A brilliant debut for the band and hopefully only the beginning for a successful career. -9/10
