Here I review the brand new EP from Death-Doom band BURIAL, out now via Dismal Fate Records.
- Lord Devourer opens things with strange ambient sounds that certainly give the EP a unique start, quite a cool one at that. The menacing drop of the guitars, bass, vocals and drums hits like a sledgehammer out of nowhere with grisly Death-Doom that sounds macabre as hell right from the onset. The churning instrumentals slowly giving us punishing Heavy Metal attack with HM-2 style guitar tones that just cut you apart when you listen. The morbidity of the EP is evident within the first minute of this track. Things pick up in tempo with blistering Death Metal velocity throwing every punch it has at you. Some foul, rotten, putrid and absolutely wonderful material! A brilliant start!
- The Sleeper Of Ravermos storms into existence with slow paced, heavily distorted guitars, crushing drums and hideously brutal vocals. The doomy rhythm and gruelling riffs are intense as hell and crawl along at a meandering pace that really allows the atmosphere to sound huge. The culmination of Swedish style Death Metal and Doom Metal is one that is ludicrously heavy. The fast paced sections tear you apart after the catatonically doomy beginnings, ripping through chunks of pure Death Metal mayhem. A cluster of dismally dark and tense extremity is what this song can be described as, a fine example of how fantastic Death-Doom can be.
- Cancer God is the last in this trio of tracks. Firing into crusty guitars at slow pace to set a grisly mood for the final track, soon the vocals, drums and bass join for one last assault of insanely good music. The brutally put together track just punches over and over with ferociously heavy riffs that sound like Dismember meets Candlemass, a glorious mixture. The harshly growled vocals are perfectly suited to the gristle churning guitars, as are the relentless pounding drums. A killer final track!
This is some crushing, filthily heavy, dragging, Death-Doom that is crusty and noisy yet well paced. The insanely epic 3 track EP should be on everybody’s list of stuff to check out. This trio of songs was devastating. Fantastic work! -8.5/10
