Here I review the new second full length from Norwegian Blackened Death Metallers NORDJEVEL! Set for release on March 29th via Osmose Productions!
- Sunset Glow throws us right into cataclysmic riffs, blasts beats and just total ferocity from the whole band, the grooving pace of the song is intensely heavy and crushing with tight tones and high end production. The bleaker following riffs add atmospheric touches to the song before the grinding fury continues. The vocals are perfectly cold and dismal, something Norway’s Black Metal scene is known for. The song has a nice chugging break before descending into oblivion again. A totally ferocious opening track filled with so much hasty anger and killer songwriting. A great start.
- Devilry follows up with more menacingly heavy riffs, dissonance and cascading grooves that pack such a heavy punch, I immediately know this album with be brutally harsh. The melodic riffs and soaring vocal howls over unrelenting drums is full of impact and monolithic drive. There is some really intricate melody to the music that gives it a gorgeously unique sound and really interesting rhythm. The song is a much more upbeat and actually quite joyful piece with a really fantastic structural integrity that was incredibly enticing. The whammy oriented solo was really cool and had a great old school vibe to it before the lead tremolo picked sections. Glorious!
- The Idea Of One-ness drives out more chaotic fury filled with hauntingly discordant riffs and hideously fast drums, vocals that are incredibly tormenting and a storming rhythm that just assaults you throughout. There is respite in the softer sections which break the song up allowing momentum to rebuild for when the full paced attacks kick back in. This is some decimating material that is utterly monstrous. There are plenty of examples within the sound that show a huge amount of influence from the Norwegian Black Metal scene but also a variety of influence from Death Metal too, adding some brutality to the musical palette. Wonderful!
- Black Lights From The Void slows things down with doomy rhythm / bass sections, pounding drums and blisteringly cold lead tremolo picking. The chilling atmosphere of this piece is beautiful. We are soon thrown into convulsive and incredibly heavy grooves, the weaving of these two soundscapes is a completely awesome one that flows with such a natural progression yet maintains an exciting feel to it. The sound of the band itself with the tight production is huge, a total obliteration of the senses. This was another really strong track.
- Amen Whores is immediately captivating with its fantastic grooves and excellent instrumental work as a whole with no holds barred. The totally aggressive pace and execution of this song is perfect headbanging material with so much bite. The vocals are heinously harsh, the guitar and bass is grinding out majestically crushing riffs and the drums are just terrifically fast. This song was utterly devastating in all the best ways. This track was also incredibly catchy which adds to the impact of the music really well. A totally hideous affair of purely excellent Extreme Metal.
- The Fevered Lands starts off with some horrific sampling that definitely sets a grisly and unpleasant vibe to the song which quickly transcends into more ridiculously fast blasting and riffs once again. An unholy concoction of frenzied Extreme Metal that is balanced with more melodic touches is what we are given. The grisly churning piece of music is absolutely killer with soaring riffs that really encompass the chaotic pace of the song beautifully. The spoken word sections over some of the best riffs of the album and precise yet intensely fast drums was one of the albums highlights for me. A stunningly dark track.
- Nazarene Necrophilia begins with whiplash instrumentals that are just insanely fun to listen to. The cataclysm of harshness that the band provides is so damn catchy and filled with storming groove that you cannot help but headbang to it. The simplicity of the track is quite different to the others due to their more progressive touches, this works really well and adds a certain contrast to the release. The production really lets the bass come through more than ever on this song which adds a nice warmth to the music. This track was just gloriously old school and fantastic!
- Apokalupsis Eschation throws out fast paced assaults with total haste. The Marduk style riffs and drums create a chaotic intensity both profound and primal with no lack of energy to be found within the music. The storming assaults are absolutely excellent with nothing being held back by the band. The whole thing from songwriting to performance and production is just perfectly put together to create an anarchistic wall of purely gorgeous Black Metal warfare that is unrelenting and catatonically heavy. If you want a song filled with absolutely frenzy yet precision and order, one that is also atmospheric yet groovy as hell, look no further.
- Panzerengel is the closing track for the album and by far the longest at 8 and a half minutes. Flowing perfectly on from the last song but slowing things into darker and more foreboding territory. The fantastic drum solo and epic synths building up to furious guitars and a harshly abrupt atmosphere. The song soars into life with a melancholy that is also filled with loathing and disgust. A full package of dissonantly harsh and yet equally melodic Blackened Death Metal which is using this last opportunity to show us everything the band has. Grinding brutality and fiercely cold atmospherics are strung together in a precise way that is filled with energy and a natural flow that works so astonishingly well. This final piece is a perfect representation of the bands capabilities. Absolutely brilliant!
This new album is some incredibly strong material. The Black Metal side of things is filled with atmosphere and melody while also complemented by the brutality and ferocious nature of Death Metal. An extreme experience throughout that works incredibly well as a whole piece of art. Certainly worth a listen! -8/10
