ALBUM REVIEW: Sulphur Aeon – The Scythe Of Cosmic Chaos

While catching up on a few release I did not have the chance to review, I decided another album receiving a shortened review would be Sulphur Aeon with their new album “The Scythe Of Cosmic Chaos” which was released near the end of 2018 via Van Records.

Sulphur Aeon conjure a hellish Lovecraftian vision into spectral and cosmic soundscapes that are filled with atmosphere, dissonance and also progression. This band has been ahead of the curve for some time now, with their cult following. Not to mention every release they have had, this one included, has generally made a lot of best of year lists for people. This album has a vast array of sounds used from gothic texturing, Black Metal atmospherics, Death Metal brutality and some folk like harmonies, this album does not lack diversity. Quality is another thing it has in spades, fantastic songwriting which is used to create excellent pieces of music that flow together with unique and precise storytelling vibes to the music. The album is epic, grandiose and a glorious piece of work that is so uniquely brilliant and truly some of the more atmospheric Death Metal I have heard. While it may lack in primal brutality, it feels intelligently made with craftsmanship truly being put to the music which feels like they chose only the best material they could make. This album truly does what it sets out to do successfully and conjures up visions of cosmic gothic horrors and entities unknown. A brilliant addition to the bands catalogue! The best comparison I can make for this release would be to imagine if HP Lovecraft remade Behemoth’s “Demigod” album with some progressive flourishes added. Outstanding! -8.5/10
