ALBUM REVIEW: Horrisonous – A Culinary Cacophony

Here I review the debut album from Horrisonous, some old school Death Metal filth from Memento Mori Records, set for release on January 21st.

1. Kuru Worship draws in with feedback that drops into doomy and atmospheric riffs. The cacophony of crushing instruments drives into slow tempo Death Metal that has an utterly morbid, decimating heaviness to it. The grotesque vocals over the well paced guitar, bass and drums work in unison to create a grisly opening piece filled with vibrant mystique and churning dissonance. The riffs are catchy, the drums groovy and the vocals disturbing, all of the elements for some excellent Death-Doom have been put in place with this fantastic opening track.
2. The Gavage follows up with more menacing instrumental assaults topped with a gorgeously harsh scream from the vocalist. The hauntingly macabre vibe to the music is something this label seem to be brilliant at hunting down and releasing. This is some consistently primitive yet rampaging Death Metal filled with darkness and loathing. An utterly disgusting piece of old school Death-Doom that was furiously aggressive yet equally atmospheric.
3. Perpetual Mincing blasts right into marching instrumentals and grunted vocals that fire out hatred with an integral morbidity right away. The obliterating heaviness met with such slow tempos is something beautiful that the band pull of with such excellence. A storming mixture of great songwriting and glorious execution that creates a heinous journey into extremity that is just wonderful. This song was painfully well put together in a way that both unnerves and entices to create a hypnotic piece of Metal insanity.
4. A Tale Of Matriphagy comes in with an unexpected melodic twist to the music. The upbeat riffs are ferocious yet with a sombre touch to them that is just stunning. We are then thrown into chaotic barrages of blistering violence. Convulsive guitars and drums mixed with the vocalists’ varied approach that combined packs a hell of a punch. This song felt very different to the others, giving a unique and unpredictable twist to the album that still worked with the other tracks incredibly well. There are some gorgeous blackened touches to this song that were just thunderously atmospheric and stunning. Fantastic!
5. Flesh Presented For Orgasmic Torment blasts right back into more waves of gruesomely morbid Death Metal assaults. The upbeat grind of the riffs and drums, coated with hideously harsh vocals creates a furious blend of menacing music that will surely get you headbanging along to it. The grisly melancholy found within the song is an excellent yet subtle contradiction to the outwardly aggressive piece of ferociously heavy music. The doomy riffs are gorgeously epic and well used to create a monolithic atmosphere and break up the monstrous momentum of the assault. I loved the guitar solo, something that I am glad has not been used much, because it made this one really stand out. This track was wonderful.
6. Crispy Chunks Of The Obese fires us more waves of old school extremity filled with life and aggression, the production perfectly suited to the style of music to allow it to have the full impacting quality it deserves. The churning monstrosity that is this song is like a lumbering titan of purely gorgeous old school Death Metal worship that captures every nuance and adds a unique blend of doomy qualities to the mix for a familiar yet new and refreshing experience.
7. Nourishment Through Excrement slows things down again with more crushing doomy riffs and slow tempo drums hits that are performed with total strength and confidence. The hideously snarled lyrics are well suited to the piece of music that has a really sleazy strut to the extreme assaults. A gloriously dissonant and hideously harsh slab of meaty Metal that will have fans of bands like Tomb Mold very satisfied.
8. The Number Of The Feast is the closing piece of the album, let’s see how they end this monstrosity of glory. First up we are hurled into grinding riffs that stand alone with total strength but grow further in impact when drums and vocals are added. The whiplash attack of the song is furious yet feels reserved, I am hoping this means they are building to something even heavier. Of course they do, the band aren’t going to have a weak last track! The crushing assaults are primal, hate-fuelled and damn heavy with total consistency. This piece is the longest of the album, just short of 8 minutes, thankfully the band keep the pace of the track and change things up in a way that does not feel fragmented but does keep the piece fresh. A killer ending song with some really brutal material, once again! Great work!

This release is crushing. Decimating Death Metal mixed with touches of dissonant Doom Metal morbidity, this release is haunting throughout. Utterly filthy, dismally dark and unrelentingly brutal, fans of OSDM or Death-Doom need to check this one out. -8/10
