Here I review the new EP from Portuguese Blackened Speed Metallers SATAN MY MASTER!
- Tormenting The Nazarene Swine opens with some awesome classic horror sampling creating a great feeling of dread. The frantic but awesome riffs over crashing drums sounds awesome with a great bass line thrown in and hideous vocals. The lyrics are great and the vocalist sounds a bit like Attila from Mayhem in parts. The aggression and primitive nature of this music is executed gorgeously. The lead solo is chaotic but very well played and completely breaks through the rhythm in the mix.
- Warbrothers Of Darkness continues the fast-paced assault on the listener. The once more primal attack of the instrumentation, with tons of fast drums, excellent guitar and bass which is mixed greatly but still in a raw style is topped off with more tormenting vocals. The song is more atmospheric than the previous but in no way anything short of maniacal. I am really enjoying this tracks surging waves of hatred and pure classic Black Metal worship. The solo is more simplistic but still very ear-catching and nice to listen to although very malicious rhythms back it up. Another killer track.
- Servant Of Hell opens with more slow tempo chugging guitar riffs and some faster mute picking. It sounds really brutal and more on the Death Metal side of things other than the sheerly demonic vocals. The more laid back but still hellishly aggressive style of this song is absolutely amazing. The thrashier riffs work very well with the blasting drums and growled vocals. The song sounds like something straight from the early 90s and is played absolutely brilliantly with fantastic old school sounding production. The later part of the song is more dissonant and then the more technical riffing follows up gloriously. Finally the solos sound absolutely killer, another awesome track which turned out to be really catchy too.
- Sceptre Of Doom follows up nicely with faded in lead guitar, pick slides and nice heavy chord use. The crashing cymbals add a lot to this build up and the bass sounds really dark yet warm in contrast to the colder guitar tone. The vocals take a more traditional approach and sound really great. The song has a tense, bleak and almost classic Heavy Metal feeling to it, the discomfort is created well with the very Mayhem like vocals over very old school riffs. The haunting feeling of it sounds like there is a mix of influence from Mayhem and Sarcofago to Mercyful Fate and maybe even some bands like Accept too. This track sounds absolutely evil, amazing work. The almost clean vocals over shredding solos sounds astounding.
- Nuclear Abomination kicks the speed straight back in. The gnarly vocals over fast paced guitar, bass and drums sounds more like Watain than anything to me. It is still incredibly original, full of amazing riffs and sound evil laughter. The solo is blistering and the whole track has an amazingly spiteful attack to it. There has clearly been a lot of emotion and cathartic energy go into this music and it really shows, something I absolutely love in Extreme Metal. This song is my favourite of the album, a must listen!
- Son Of A Whore finishes the album as it started, with a song opened by samples. The heavy as hell bass guitar sounds wicked, the addition of drums blasting brings it together and finally vocals and guitars kick in. The atmosphere of this song is once again aggressive and chaotic. The brilliant yet primitive attack of the instruments topped with hate-fuelled vocals sounds beautiful. If you gave Venom a ton more aggression and more extreme vocals, this is how it would sound. For those who want Black Metal to be primal and untouched with a classic feeling, this band is one you have to hear. Final word on this track as how amazing the lyrics are, awesome stuff.
The sound is raw, hectic, aggressive and primitive. The atmosphere is simple but will tear you apart. Amazing EP and definitely a band worth keeping an eye on. The musicianship is varied and diverse especially for this kind of band, with tons of styles used and the vocals top it perfectly. Perfect for fans of bands like Blasphemy, Beherit, etc. -8.5/10
