ALBUM REVIEW: Gruesome – Twisted Prayers

Today I will be reviewing the new album from Death Metal band GRUESOME, a band I must confess I have never actually listened to but despite that I have seen a lot about them and this new release and figured I would check it out and share my thoughts, so here they are.

1. Inhumane kicks straight in with Old School “Death” vibes to spare, not in a knockoff style but a clear influence. Absolutely killer opening track and I wonder what the hell was wrong with me taking so long to check them out. Absolutely gritty, tasteful Old School Death Metal, the way it should be.
2. A Waste of Life continues the melodic Death worship gloriously, riff packed, technical, beautifully done. The guitars are definite Chuck worship with simplistic but killer drums, and raw possessed vocals. I must also add the lead guitars are absolutely amazing.
3. Fate is yet another head banging worthy track, more riffs, grooves and great songwriting. Absolutely killer material and the further in I get, the more I am kicking myself for taking so long to check this band out. This song has more thrash parts to it which really add to the dynamic of the album perfectly.
4. Lethal Legacy just bangs out more and more catchy riffs, old school as ever and wonderfully nostalgic to the fans of the original Death Metal bands. The guitar work, bass, drums and vocals all fitting together like perfectly made parts of a puzzle bringing rhythmic glory to the listener.
5. Fatal Illusions thrashes, crashes and assaults the listener with barrages of pure f**king Death Metal. The fact this band pull this style of so perfectly in 2018 is astounding and gives me hope that they will inspire more waves of OSDM revival bands.
6. Crusade of Brutality to put it boldly would make the guys from Death, Obituary, Deicide etc proud. It is a masterpiece and after “Inhumane” would be my second favourite track. It’s, as it says in the title, a “Crusade Of Brutality” which I find very fitting. Magnificent solos, vocals, drumming and riffs.
7. At Death’s Door is full of technicality and classy songwriting, showcasing that just because a band is gory and brutal in theme it can have very intellectual structure and musicianship.
8. Twisted Prayers closes the album with yet more grooves and fittingly another Old School masterpiece. A really great closing track to this latest record of the band.

An astounding piece of Old School Death Metal worship, fit to make Death proud and a release I hope is followed by many more! -9/10
