ALBUM REVIEW: Angelus Apatrida – Cabaret De La Guillotine

Here I will be reviewing the new album from Spanish Thrashers ANGELUS APATRIDA! A band I saw support Havok in Norwich a few years back and really enjoyed. This review comes a little while after release, but I had to write about this.

01. Sharpen The Guillotine opens with lovely acoustic guitars and a dark atmosphere. The song hits with amazing Thrash riffs, clear melodies, tight as hell production and beautiful vocals. An amazing opening piece.
02. Betrayed is a groovy as hell, old school Thrash, head banging masterpiece. This song is absolutely killer and still keeps powerful harmonies aplenty. The clean vocals once again are insanely good.
03. Ministry Of God is heavier than the last two with a more Exodus feel to it. Really brutal, classic Thrash Metal, this song changes the tempo and melodies to a more primitive attack which contrasts the previous well.
04. The Hum goes back to catchy vocals hooks over punchy riffs, a really tasteful approach to very powerful music. Unlike most Thrash Metal it feels less aggressive and in substitute a lot more technical, with blistering solos and crisp drumming.
05. Downfall Of The Nation instantly sounded like Evile to me, not a bad thing, it once again fills the ears with classic Thrash attack, slightly more aggressive than other songs by the band but still remaining melodic and really very gracious.
06. One Of Us utilises a more crossover approach, I have to say I love the diversity of this album, this song is sheer speed and a track that I am sure will fuel many Mosh Pits live! In addition I am loving the harsh vocals here.
07. The Die Is Cast brings in wave after wave of amazing songwriting, it really is a very well put together release and the mixing is near perfection, especially on tracks like this. Plenty of aggression, speed and reckless assaults in this piece.
08. Witching Hour slows the pace, at least temporarily, which is a nice breather. Coming back with insanely melodic vocals and blasts of drums and in-your-face riffs.
09. Farewell once again slows things with dark clean guitars, ambience, and grace. Soaring leads and simplistic drums add to the atmosphere. This is reminiscent of one of Death Angel’s power ballads, and I have to say I really like it.
10. Martyrs Of Chicago gives us one last round of thrash madness. More killer catchy riffs and blasting drums. The vocals go for a more modern thrash approach and the song closes the album with perfect ferocity.

A great new release from Angelus Apatrida, and one I should have listened to much sooner! Melodic, technical, aggressive and diverse. -8/10
