ALBUM REVIEW: Cutthroat – Invoking Death

Irish death-thrash metal mob Cutthroat unleash their debut MLP of wild savagery. Set for release via Dying Victims Productions on June 19th. I became aware of them via trading with Brione’s Roar of War fanzine and look forward to seeing these maniacs destroy London soon!

Opening with feedback drawing into a long song for the style, Cutthroat erupt with death metal of the merciless variety. Intricate drums fly across the kit as mean vocals spit venom through the tight guitar riffing. The organic production is rough but clear and powerful with a dryness to it that few bands have the guts to do these days. Instantly I adore how all over the place this is from the rumbling bass to razor-sharp dive bombs and wild vocals. Especially present is the drum work which is nice and high in the mix to hear how frantic the battery is. This is a glorious presentation of total thrashing, high speed, death metal mania. Malevolent atmospherics blend with raging ferocity to ensure that all headbangers are tied to the rusted barbed wire flailing from the speakers. As my first impression of the band’s music, I am impressed. It always brings me joy hearing younger fellas inspired by the same things I love in metal music and doing something so wild and fierce.

Ever wondered what it means to “burst command ’til war”? Well, these lads figured it out. It’s playing rabid metal, whether it’s heavy, speed, thrash, black, death or best yet; that murky enigma that fills the cracks between them all. Cutthroat play in that poisoned vein that exploded in the 80s but continues to hold a mystique and power like no other to this day. Frenzied guitar work barrelling into crushing bass lines with utterly mental drumming and psychotic vocals… that’s what it’s all about! This is a spiteful release that punishes trend-followers and modern insults to true metal – and they do it so damned well. If you ain’t morbid, get out of here now, before it’s too late..!

These morbid rites are so packed with energy, passion and aggression that you will undoubtedly need several listens to fully appreciate all of the moments of mania they manage to squeeze into 24 minutes. Every second is ruthless and yet the dynamics range from these pulsating pustules of morbidity to the full explosion of barbarity and bestial lust that one would expect from such a record. I don’t want to ramble on too long, this release is short and sweet; so I want the review to be the same. Listen to this if you like proper death metal. If you don’t; grow up.

A ripping cut of lethal death. This is the kind of wild extremity that made me fall in love with Autopsy, Morbid Angel, Possessed, Dark Angel and so on as a youngster. Proving the timeless value of this music, a new band like Cutthroat playing their own spin on these titans still has so much artistic merit and room for exploration. The feel is perfect here. From the art, production and most of all the music; “Invoking Death” lives up to its name and calls the savages of old with these diabolical incantations. Live for violence or die trying!

Rating: 8.5 out of 10.
