Following their two magnificent albums, two EPs and a split with Malthusian; Suffering Hour are back with a third EP. Out now via Profound Lore Records.
Instantly the grim and menacing guitar work and impactful drums will have you ensnared for the long haul. Punching in with the malicious intent they mean to go on with, Suffering Hour recognise their arcane powers and how to harness them most effectively and this is including some new elements. From the openings barbaric, gloomy chaos to the more melodic and twisted moments; it is clear that every second of this shorter release will be used with carefully selected instrumental passages and vocals that sound meaner than ever. With that sense of intricacy, we can delve further into the swirling abysses of evil. The impressive clarity of such intense performances is a necessity and the mix serves that purpose of presenting every layer with its deserved presence. Dancing from melancholic deranged hexes to rampage outbreaks of evil, there is an impressive amount of variety on this MLP but without going off piste too much as to lose its impact or flow.
Amidst all of the twisting and turning passages of dissonant magic, Suffering Hour offer some of their most thrashy and bestial riffs to date. This takes their prior works and gives it a really savage edge that serves them gloriously on this shorter format to inflict razor sharp wounds at an alarming rate. 80s grooves and spellbinding destruction blend seamlessly in a manner that one could compare to a more dissonant variant of Spirit Possession or Negative Plane. That said, it is totally distinct and recognisable as Suffering Hour thanks to those estranged leads even if they do some unexpected thrashing here and there. I found this mixture to be really interesting and some of their finest work yet. These shorter songs feel frantic and yet full of texture and timbre that is satisfying and totally rabid. Keeping all of the eerie atmosphere but sharpened it to a spearhead of malice, Suffering Hour triumphs once more.
A 45rpm cut of intense, blistering and bloodletting extreme metal majesty. Taking the finest elements of the bands prior work and injecting a more immediate style to the riffing; there is nothing to complain about on “Impelling Rebirth”. Thankfully it feels like a fresh release, rather than just some excess fat cut off the last LP. A compelling, ruthless and exhilarating listen.
