ALBUM REVIEW: Proscription – Desolate Divine

Finland’s blackened death metal contortionists Proscription released one of 2020s finest albums “Conduit“. Now they are back with their second full length, due for release via Dark Descent Records on August 29th.

Malicious riffs forcefully pummel into life with hammered drums and bestial vocals. Opening with a maelstrom of evil, the gargantuan production can be felt in the guts from the very onset as spewing morbidity lurches forth with each passing moment. Warping tremolo guitars and blast-beats convulse in abyssal atmospherics while the roaring voice fits the destructive approach perfectly. Balancing the more extreme bursts with some groove and eeriness; the band masterfully inject a true sense of dread into each songs as blistering dissonance captivates you with cinematic disquiet. Casting shadows with each passing movement, Proscription ensure you will be paralysed by the overwhelming sense of savagery and anguish that is force-fed from the opening songs until you become a possessed entity bending to their will. Revel in the radiating gleam of the Morningstar.

Betwixt the bludgeoning infernos of death metal furore, the more gloomy and discordant flourishes and twists keep things really gripping in the most macabre and uncomfortable of ways. Their relentless approach with clever songwriting is rewarding and never loses intensity which is where a record like this could go fatally wrong. Thankfully Proscription understands delivery as well as they write music and concoct a sublime and potent recording that is visceral and twisted to its very core. Storming forth with each new section, the band seems to have endless furious ideas ready to explode while understanding the importance of dynamics and contrast. This is an exhilarating listen that holds you in the palm of a malignant hand as each unhinged piece unfolds before your very eyes and ears.

If contorting savagery is not to your taste, Proscription will strip you of your flesh. This is a venomous listen and demands intensive listening and attentiveness. These blasting tempests of insane riffing and inhuman vocals sit atop varied and wonderful drum work for the senses to feast upon a band giving us their all as a singularity. Their bleaker moments barrel into gadarene assaults without ever faltering. Churning forth abysmal darkness and an abyss-like atmosphere that yawns agape to swallow you whole; Proscription’s time writing and crafting this behemoth has clearly paid off as every detail feels meticulously placed. The intention and delivery of this album never erode, always showcasing the band are strictly adhering to their own vision which does not copy nor mimic another. Strong until its explosive ending, the varied and yet cohesive execution of these pieces will have you enchanted for the entire opus and flooded by the need to experience it again.

A towering monolith of grandiose sadism; Proscription’s new album is a flagellating and yet bewildering listen. Serving aggression and anxiety in equal measure with a multi-layered, ever-shifting but never softened approach; this record is vicious to the bones. Bending and erupting, each flow of musical magma scorches with merciless rage. Untamed ’til its climax, “Desolate Divine” is an unwieldy listen that fans of black and death metal alike shall adore. The darkness shall never be extinguished, for it consumes us all…

Rating: 8.5 out of 10.
