Wisconsin’s kings of brutal Death Metal MORTA SKULD are back with their seventh full length album. Set for release via Peaceville Records on February 23rd.
Disclaimer: before reading this review, I would like to point out that Morta Skuld have used AI artwork on this release. This is something I vehemently stand against so please take it into consideration. While this won’t affect the score on their music, I feel it is very important you are all aware.
Blistering guitars launch into a lethal assault of brutal Death Metal atop waves of visceral drumming, immediately conveying pure crushing force. Morta Skuld are one of those bands I always felt were unfairly overlooked and if you need convincing, the first minute of this record will pull you in unless you hate real extremity. Harsh vocals join the malignant yet clear mix as the skull-stomping onslaught continues. Rhythmically flawless, this devouring experience shall pull you into the morbid abysses of total annihilation. Between the bludgeoning drums and guitar viciousness, the palpably aggressive snarls permeate an otherwise impenetrable mix to give us a lacerating experience across the board. From the opening moments of “Creation Undone” we hear something so heavy it will fragment all that lies in its path, leaving only carnage and desecration in their wake.
Macerating riffs continually pummel from all angles, as the savage unfurling of decay takes place. It should be obvious that this band has a lot of experience writing truly killer music from the flow of ferocity that takes place here. Although rife with rotten rhythmic battery, there is some sense of melody and so much excellent structuring to these tracks that ensures you will be gripped throughout this guttural listening endeavour. Swinging their sepulchral sword through any banging neck they come across, the meat of this album sure is tasty to sink your teeth into as beefy guitars continue to spew forth that chunky groove of old school sawing savagery.
Venomously intense and extreme right to the end. Morta Skuld prove that some bands who return from a hiatus still have what they did back in the day. If the last couple did not convince you, here is yet more evidence of these 90s legends doing their thing with strength in the 2020s. There is something that will always impress me about a band doing so, showing the spirit of this music can never truly rest within those possessed by it. Being honest, this is not a diverse album at all. But realistically I do not think anybody wants nor expects that of a band such as this. We wanted utterly relentless Death Metal barbarity, and we got it. No more, no less and certainly no moments of weakness. Overall I can unequivocally call this a triumphant record.
If you already love Morta Skuld, or extremely heavy old school Death Metal in general, this punishing new LP is definitely going to satisfy that feral appetite for violent destruction. A collection of putridly pulverising tracks from one of the most sonically intense slaughterers of the underworld.
