ALBUM REVIEW: Departure Chandelier – Satan Soldier Of Fortune

Napoleonic Black Metal project DEPARTURE CHANDELIER returns with a second album of exquisite evil. Out via Nuclear War Now Productions on February 23rd.

Enchanting synths begin this album with that bewitching feeling that has enshrouded this projects entire journey. In equally bombastic fashion the glaring riffs cut into the air with an intense sharpness alongside furious percussion, still soaked in the reverberate ambience of the synths. The equally frantic vocal delivery scornfully penetrates the vicious instrumental attack with all forming something both gorgeous and abrasive. Alongside the dreamier elements, there is plenty of groove to this gritty and sometimes punky Black Metal that keeps momentum strong while the atmosphere is resplendent. Indeed the raw, unforgiving production sounds like it was crafted in the Parisian catacombs as each element of the soundscape pierces the air. Elements of doom and gloom serpentine into the hellish onslaught and give some sense of dread to the sound, showcasing the sense of dynamics that this project has to offer is far greater than many of their contemporaries. Thus far, “Satan Soldier of Fortune” is off to a fantastic start.

Blistering through chapter after chapter of varied, textured and colourful Black Metal malice, there is no denying Departure Chandelier have a sound truly of their own. Although reminiscent of the 90s, it does not feel like one single band is having their identity stolen. On the contrary, this record shows that a unique amalgamation of influences and strong thematic direction can still be used to concoct something totally new and refreshing. The antiquated soundscape harkens back to the Black Metal of old, while forging a new path in darkness with their sheer and merciless delivery of Napoleonic warfare. Coupling this with fantastic use of synths that doesn’t overshadow the raw heart of the menacing music and ensuring the end result is unpolished and classically so, there is so much to be enthralled by on this gripping record.

There is something indescribably recognisable about the way the chords seem to churn forth an impenetrable and ecstatic feeling of passion that is seething with aggression but almost romantic. This cathartically forceful yet melancholic and sensitively visceral approach is something rare, intangible and glorious that must be sought in such a record. Often a hallmark of excellent quality, this songwriting harnesses a potent and ancient flame that is undistllled in its conjuration of majestic Black Metal. Utterly ravenous from start ’til end, this mature and yet untempered slice of ghoulish metallic furore is truly a spectacle worthy of this wonderful discography. A real feast of evilness for the senses most diabolic desires that Departure Chandelier delight in fulfilling.

Those who have grown weary of homogenous Black Metal being churned out ad nauseam can always rely on there being the occasional gem in the underground that feels inspired and noteworthy. I would definitely argue Departure Chandelier are such a candidate whom fly their own flag and have enough sonic, aesthetic and artistic integrity to set them apart from a sea of regurgitated hipster-appeasing atmospheric nonsense. Another triumph for Métal Noir Québécois!
