ALBUM REVIEW: Cemetery Urn – Suffer The Fallen

Australian old school Death Metal violators CEMETERY URN are back with their fifth album, coming via Hells Headbangers on October 27th.

Bestial extremity rips right in with barbaric riffs and visceral drumming. This hammer-blow goes for the jugular with equally vicious vocals, only offering the most savagely true Death Metal furore to open the opus of morbidity. Charged with a charnel atmosphere and violently tight musicianship, the immediately malicious and hostile sounds of Cemetery Urn will grip any true fiend for the old school. Rupturing all that is holy, this blasphemous barrage of might has a seamless delivery of sadistic carnage that flows naturally, from the guttural rhythms to the majestic leads. All elements bring alchemical warfare to the foreground with sonic upheaval more intense than most could conceive. A truly formidable sound both in terms of songwriting and production, offering only the filthiest and most unforgiving cuts of cryptic slaughter. As a huge fan of their prior material, I am ecstatic to hear Cemetery Urn back on such fine form.

Forging further into the abysses of decay, this unrelenting record blends truly merciless musicianship and clever twists to keep things furiously intense while unpredictably volatile. This renders it not only exciting, but daunting, in the best way. Emanating evil and dread with every purposeful step, it is easy to tell that not only are these seasoned musicians but also hone their craft carefully as a unit to razor-sharp precision. This pays off, giving an album that is concise and yet cuts no corners, stripping things back to the essentials then expanding upon those elements with zealous but worthwhile elaborations. The soloing is a perfect element, never overstaying their welcome yet flooding the songs with some epic leads, putting pedal to the metal while keeping the Death Metal flame burning brighter than ever with bellowing cacophonies of savagery. Everything here feels untamed and like the band are holding nothing back, let’s hope this feverish attack is maintained until the end.

The continual flowing of putridity will wash over you with corrosive malice, again and again. As the album surges toward its end, there is no respite, only more reigning supremacy of true darkness. If you can withstand the pulverising and crushing might of “Suffer The Fallen”, you will definitely find yourself revisiting it because all of the gloriously hateful pieces absolutely slaughter. Every song holds a valid place on the track list, wasting no time and only giving us the treatment of terror we deserve. Naturally with the lineup having so much experience, they obviously know how to put an album together and it really shows with this being a wonderful end product of their labour. Bands like Cemetery Urn keep real Death Metal alive and they have not dropped the ball on this one in the slightest.

A vicious monolith of Death Metal played with its true evil spirit intact. Malignant, unforgiving and primal, yet with truly excellent musicianship and a vibrant production. Fall to the graven hammer of Cemetery Urn and witness their ungodly visions contort into life through the most abhorrent sonic spectres. Five albums in, and these Australian maniacs are still conquering and offering worthy material.
