EP REVIEW: Stälker – Cranking Evil

A two song hellish burst from New Zealand Speed Metallers STALKER is here, coming on November 4th via Napalm Records!

“Ripped To Pieces” is the a-side, complete with 80s style music video, a killer start. Jumping in with raunchy riffing and ferocious drums, the bestial hurricane of pure old school Speed Metal hellfire is absolutely monstrous. Whiplash headbanging will be necessary the moment you encounter the savage instrumental force, while the maniacally venomous vocals add a certain hostility that furthers the rage-fuelling track. Blistering solos, crushing battery and an overall killer feel to the music presented with a raw production and natural execution, this is exactly the kind of EP one would want from a band like Stälker, feeling like a cult gem of the olden days (especially when presented as a maxi-single on 12″, a true relic). A fantastic start to things.

Turn-over to “Kneel and Worship” slows things touch, with monolithic riffs and soaring leads atop mountainous drums riding a wave of scathing double-kicks while the spiteful vocal delivery adds a foreboding aggression. As you can see in the photo Halloween and Virtue shirts appear, so it’s easy to point to the older influences which is probably a huge factor in Stälker’s classic, traditional and epic sound which certainly should appeal to most headbangers. That said, it feels like they definitely DO Metal with evil! Especially on this fiery offering which commands your reverence for the gods of steel and carnage.

A face-melting, double-edged offering of ferocious Speed Metal, keeping it true and high-octane with remorseless execution across the board. Stälker play fast, loud and mercilessly, leaving a trail of poser corpses and burning chaos.

Rating: 8 out of 10.
