EP REVIEW: Weregoat – The Devil’s Lust

Bestial Black-Death Metal warlords WEREGOAT are back with a new EP, out on August 12th via Iron Bonehead Productions and Parasitic Records.

Ritualistic sampling opens the EP before speeding riffs reign a firestorm of seething fury upon us. Barrages of blasting drums and maniacal vocals quickly ensue for a ruthless and visceral display of pure bestial malevolence. There is an injection of Thrash Metal into the Black/Death assault that suits the band gloriously as they unleash a tempest of belligerent sonic artillery with no mercy. Naturally the solos consists more of whammy dives than anything (aside from the last song which has some wickedly sleazy leads) while those militantly stomping hooks add even more momentum to the onslaught. Eerier moments creep in while retaining the savagery building around the EP’s opening moments, truly an unforgiving start and triumphant return from Weregoat.

Marching onward, the warlike battery from the entire band is rivalled only in rage by the scathing vocals, giving the raw and ready tracks a formidable sound across the board. Technicality couldn’t be further away as the neanderthalic instrument abuse and rampant roars drive us further and further to the peripheries of violent noise while holding it all together with an assertive and metallic core. There is enough dissonance and contortions from the War Metal template to avoid being too predictable while staying true to form. This balance is haphazard but in a manner full of intent and barbaric aggression, wherein the clear malice and frenzied chaos work in unison to give us true mayhem in volcanic form.

Enticing artwork from the master, Rok, makes this blundering opus even more of a feast for the senses and thankfully the untamed music of the feral Weregoat trio does not fall short. With 5 years since their last album (except for a live album), the wait has been worth it as we see a band retain all of the fierce and rabid lycanthropy from their earlier releases while forging forth with gadarene excitement. Remaining stoic to the forefathers of bestial Black/Death Metal without stealing their identities, Weregoat are one of the prime candidates in carrying the flag for this hostile movement, this EP showing that it is in safe hands. Perverse, unwelcoming, volatile and most of all, utterly savage, there is no denying the sheer and unwavering extremity on display here. An excellent new opus of diabolic delights that will cleanse your body and spirit of any holiness while cleaving your skull apart with its sheer brutality.

A ruthless new chapter of bestial blackened death-thrashing carnage from these blasphemous masters of the extreme arts. Primitive, merciless and unfaltering. This is unapologetic and furious, the way Metal should be.

Rating: 8 out of 10.
