ALBUM REVIEW: Sentient Horror – Rites Of Gore

Old school Death Metal mob SENTIENT HORROR are back with their newest tome of rotten offerings, set for release via Redefining Darkness Records and Testimony Records on April 22nd. Read my review of their previous album here.

The familiar sound of HM-2 guitars fire into life with that classic chainsaw tone in doomy fashion atop some excellent drum work, starting us off with a killer eerie intro before driving into oblivion. Monolithic blast beats and violent riffing meet a slew of vomitous vocals that create a frenzied OSDM assault with a superb production to unleash pure hellfire. Harkening back to the Swedish titans of the 90s, Sentient Horror proudly play in a way that lays offerings to the Death Metal of old while having plenty of value in their own music past mere nostalgia. Taking a healthy mix of blasting chaos, groovy mid-paced d-beats and creeping doomy moments, there is much excitement to be had from the get-go.

Punishing us with pure malice and stomping skulls with unforgettable grooves, the overall feel of this record is easy to fall in love with. Painting pictures of morbid monstrosities with their Swedish Death Metal worship is plenty to enjoy in itself but their addition of technical soloing and more doom-tinged moments add a bit more flavour to the palette that sets Sentient Horror out while they proudly stay in their lane all the same. Okay, they do not reinvent the wheel, but they don’t need to in order to deliver a brilliant cut of high-grade Death Metal to awaken corpses and pulverise the living. Every track is a riff-fest, not to discount the rest of the band. The drumming is consistent yet varied, the vocals full of malicious intent and the overall production sounds massive. But those filthy riffs are definitely front and centre. From the odious “Swamp Burial”, direct “Splitting Skulls” and longer closing number “The Eyes Of Dread”, there is no time-wasting on this diabolical tome of visceral music.

“Morbid Realms” was a superb album. Everything that was great about that from the classic riffs, memorable songwriting and wonderfully tied together ideas to create a monolith of macabre is present here and turned up to 11. There is more diversity, more aggression and more horror to give us an everflowing stream of pure OSDM magnificence.

Rating: 8.5 out of 10.
