INTERVIEW: Morbific

Finland’s MORBIFIC unleashed one revoltingly killer album of Death Metal might with a 2nd underway so I decided to speak to these necromancers of all things old school about their music!

  1. Morbific, you are a Finnish Death Metal band playing the rotten old school style despite being younger guys. How important is it for you to keep the traditions of real Death Metal alive and a core element in your music and which bands (perhaps some Finnish obscurities, but more on that later) influenced you?

I don’t know, we just really love playing and creating OSDM and have never thought about the aspect of keeping it alive, at least I haven’t. But if that’s what it means I’m glad to be a part of it, haha!

  2. Following a rotten demo of putrefying songs, you went right for the jugular with a debut album that Headsplit and War Anthem Records put out. I think I can take a guess, but how happy are you with the overall presentation and the work of these labels on infecting the underground with your stench?

The full length got a really good reception and we are all satisfied with how it came out. It’s been great working with all of these labels and the wonderful people behind them! Every release has been effortless and stress-free for our band, so these labels have done an amazing job.

  3. The first thing that people are likely to see is the festering logo and grotesque artwork (by Chase of Mortiferum). What do these visuals show and how important is the aesthetic side of things to the band? I personally think the logo and art looks damned killer.

Well, we want that our album covers also represent the music of course. I think Morbific’s visual side compliments the sonical side very well. The artwork by Chase is what really made our first full length. It really made it come together.
And when it comes to the logo, its festering and that’s all that really matters.

4. Talking of the debut LP, will there be a vinyl pressing? I presume the lack of one so far is due to all the current manufacturing delays?

Yes. The LP was set to come out in October and then began the delays… It should be coming out in early 2022.

5. Continuing from the point, you have now signed with Me Saco Un Ojo Records and Memento Mori Records and you’ve already put out a marvellous new track from the next album! What can we expect from this secondary tome of carnage? I can gather more grinding, chainsawing Death Metal with barbaric hooks and stomping doomy sections, so I am hopeful it’ll be a great follow-up! Spill the guts on any info we should have to prepare us for this monstrosity!

Haha, your description is actually pretty accurate! The new album will have our slowest and fastest riffs to date, the riffs are also better, there’s one longer song, there are some bouncy parts, playing is tighter etc. We are really fucking stoked to release our 2nd full length. This is will be our best effort yet without a doubt.

6. Interestingly, as a Finnish band, it sounds like you use the more crusty type of distortion pedal (like a HM-2 or similar) which as been synonymous with Swedish Death Metal as opposed to the cleaner and gloomy sound of old school Finnish Death Metal. Indeed the bass is just a filthily heavy sounding, giving a truly rotten sound! Do you take influence from your geographical neighbours and what importance does this particular tone have in Death Metal from your perspective?

We use a Boss DS-2 for guitar. It wasn’t really a consicous decicion to use it, I bought years ago and it just fits our sound nicely. The bass sound is heavily Mortician-esque and thats the most fitting for our band.

7. Being from Finland, you must be aware both historically and presently that your country has a very healthy Death (and general) Metal scene. So which bands, old or new, do you think are the absolute best of this land? From the titans to even friends you play shows with, this is your chance to represent Finland!

Here’s a list of finnish sickness everyone should check out, newer bands first: Scumripper, Cryptic Hatred, Perinei, Devil’s Vomit, Sadistic Drive (Jusa’s other band), Ghastly, Gorephilia, Galvanizer and Cadaveric Incubator. Then some older ones: Demilich, Adramelech, Rippikoulu, Abhorrence, Beherit, Convulse, Demigod, Disgrace…argh, there are too many awesome bands to list here but here are some essentials!

8. Finally, I think we all want to know what is coming next along with the 2nd LP. Any touring plans, especially for those of us outside of Finland? Perhaps some teasers on the new album details such as the expected release, artist and formats. Any words to add to the maniacs reading are now yours!

We have just recently started working on a future tour in Europe. Nothing is really set to stone yet but it will for sure turn out great. And about LP number 2: it’s already recorded, Chase will be painting the cover art for this LP too, and it will be out on all formats.

Thanks for being interested in our band! Cheers!!!
