German Death-Thrashers delivered their debut album of total carnage via Sepulchral Voice Records recently. It’s time to delve into this behemoth of barbarity.
A storm of malevolent riffing opens this album with all of the glorious ferocity of bands like Necrovore, Morbid Angel and Necros Christos (the latter making sense due to sharing previous members). If these names do not instantly make you think of truly scorching, blasphemous and savage Death Metal, turn back now. Predictably anyone with a good taste in music is still here, so onwards we forge. Sijjin have that glorious middle ground between a great production, while the music itself is totally inaccessible. By this I do not mean it sounds bad, in fact they are clearly fantastic musicians. I am referring to the sheer hostility in their playing that will scatter weak-minded people like dust as they forcefully erupt into contortions of Extreme Metal that are somehow archaic and yet totally renewed in their vigour.
From those unrelenting drums that quickly become familiar, yet not predictable to the emphasis on thrashing guitar riffs and the accompanying solos that are maniacally fast, then add in solid bass work and rapturous vocals, that’s a rough idea of the sound here. A violent and bloody offering to the ancient ones that is primitive and yet equipped with fantastic flares of technicality that inject a volatile addition to the sound and the pummelling fury becomes a feral beast with a nature that one cannot easily predict. A volatile concoction of devastating Death Metal that is unhinged and yet has a precision that is inescapable. Graven sections erupt into explosive grooves of total battery from the entire band ensuring that all of the key elements of extremity are present but presented to us in a way that forms anticipation before shattering the skull with the promised brutality.
Keeping the darkest, oldest roots of Death Metal’s malformed and morbid majesty intact while offering us a new slice of savagery, it is fair to say Sijjin’s debut full length succeeds in obliterating all it touches. A butchering monolith of mystical Death Metal magnificence.
