EP REVIEW: Abhorration – After Winter Comes War

The explosive debut EP of Norwegian Death Metallers ABHORRATION is here, due via Invictus Productions on November 26th.

Firing in with a malignant cacophony of blast beats and visceral riffing that instantly transports us back in time to the late 80s Death Metal pioneers with a blasphemous savagery that is still full of thrashing rage. The vocals are equally fearsome with a raspy howling snarl that calls on the demonic hordes to rise up and smite all in their bestial path. A raw production presents this vicious listen which is unwelcoming and yet clear, much like the potent music with its skull-fragmenting onslaught of pure devastation. Intoxicating passages build tension without betraying the ferocity, keeping things exciting through the short but violent running time which is ablaze with old school spirit and devilish aggression. Alongside an endless tempest of maniacal vocals and blazing riffs, the drum work is utterly insane with huge fills and busy playing throughout which is creative and a huge service to the dismembering soundscapes presented. There are unmistakably blackened elements to this music which adds some hellfire to the already volatile concoction of extremity ensuring the old school hellfire is total and complete in its invocations of darkness. A powerful and menacing blend indeed.

Taking all of the best parts of Death-Thrash and injecting that Norwegian mysticism to make a haunting but untempered cut of pure steel that will surely crush all those whom dare spin this tome of profanity in all of its remorseless glory. None shall be spared.

Rating: 8 out of 10.
