ALBUM REVIEW: Abraded – Abraded

Rotten Death Metal trio ABRADED are back to follow their fantastic demo with a full length album, out via Maggot Stomp Records on November 19th.

Fetid riffs and pounding drums cascade odious sludge alongside spewing vocals to instantly drop us into a swamp of utterly rancid Death Metal putrefaction. Taking some frenzied grinding elements to add a spike of chaos here and there to the generally more malignant stomping carnage, this thing sets off to a savagely brutal start. Pulsating with maggot-ridden slime, this is some of the more rotten music you will hear this year with its primitive, dragging sounds of the sewer which retain a momentum of sheer Neanderthal barbarity.

Those bouncing riffs and snappy drum beats lend a catchy side to the music a la Undergang, Cianide, Autopsy which make sure breakneck headbanging is a part of your 20 minute delve into caverns of ichorous sound. Interestingly, these guys know how to inject a face-melting solo into some primitive Death Metal to fire up the sound with a more melodic flourish while keeping things old school. For a full length record to punch in at under 20 minutes (spanning 9 songs) is unusual for the genre without going further into Grindcore territory yet this works brilliantly for Abraded whose short, to-the-point offerings of viscera don’t waste your time and ensure every second is pure filth.

A really slab of putrefying Death Metal that will have you reduced to mulch within 20 minutes of pounding, visceral malice. Regressive and with a clear intent to harken back to the old school titans while not feeling tepid or weak, this may not be the avant-garde mind warp some are seeking, but lurkers of graveyards will dig this festering corpse and welcome it fondly.

Rating: 6 out of 10.
