HYPERDONTIA are one of the leading examples of Death Metal in the modern underground. Combining old school sound with blazing musical abilities, this name should be familiar by now. Their 2nd album is set for release on November 12th via Dark Descent Records, Me Saco Un Ojo Records and Desiccated Productions.
Drawing into life on a wave of doomy eldritch riffing, the powerhouse that is Hyperdontia drag their Death Metal through the crypt to the surface with a meaty beginning. This descends into crawling riffs and drums that back up slimy vocals before the pulverising display of old school Death Metal drives forth its usual spew. As a band who have always injected a touch of technicality into their playing without it effecting the grotesque and abominable sound of their records, they have a richly textured sound while keeping all of the nastiness one could hope for which is present once again on this new LP. The sheer diversity of sounds and moods that are conveyed successfully, without jarring transitions I might add, can be heard within the first couple of songs which pull you into a tornado of visceral extremity that is remorseless and yet absolutely intricate.
The production of this thing is a huge asset, with those foreboding guitars dripping in molten bass lines that add a warped angle to the sound while the leads elevate things into a more ethereal setting. The drums are varied and often busy, but never repetitive which is key in not undoing the stringed dynamics while the hideously bellowed vocals know when to be a feral presence of total morbidity or step back to let the instrumental elements shine. There is no arguing that Hyperdontia understand in great depth how to conjure vile Death Metal of the most monolithic proportions but do so with intellect and grace that does not harness their playing abilities or restrict them to “safe” ground. This devastating new material and its malformed progression into insanity makes that abundantly clear, even as things progress and you find sanity slipping away.
Progressing though stomping grooves, swampy atmospherics and those cavernously savage sections with flawless musicianship and masterful songwriting for solos to shine through in triumphant fashion. It is blindingly obvious that Hyperdontia have not dropped the ball and continue to deliver some of the most punishing Death Metal of their career to date. Barbaric and yet refined, only the most malicious moments are kept on this record which ensures a concise and yet fulfilling experience from start to end with a plethora of gripping elements are present to truly explore and delve into. If you took the ferociously demonic sound of Morbid Angel, the violent grooves of Bolt Thrower and the angular flourishes of Gorguts, that might give an idea as to what this behemoth of the macabre has on offer, but only an idea as this needs to be heard in its own right. While keeping their integrity and identity stoically, Hyperdontia have not recycled a thing and the flow of creative and obliterating music runs rampant once again.
Hyperdontia’s return is a wonderfully executed opus of decay, desolation and death from which all manner of horrors sprawl forth. Atmospheric, visceral and wickedly tight, this thing will chew you up and spit you out into the abyss.
