EP REVIEW: Black Cilice – Tomb Emanations

Portuguese Raw Black Metal mystics BLACK CILICE return from their crypts with a new EP, set for release via Iron Bonehead Productions on December 10th.

Booming in, noisy riffs and chiming cymbals open the reverberate abyss with bleak and funereal tones. Deranged shrieks complete the raw mix and dance with the enchantingly manic hysteria of the instruments in a somewhat more melodic fashion than is the norm for Black Cilice. This is certainly not atonal, as some might propose, yet the sheer rawness with its cracking sound will definitely put off more casual Black Metal fans, for Black Cilice purposefully stick to their own methods with integrity. Blazing into a beautifully sombre, biting aggression that juxtaposes itself with eerie melancholy that is delivered incredibly fiercely, the demented sound something that is both inhuman and somehow vulnerably personal at the same time. This is piercing, as ever, something which this mysterious entity have not relented with, keeping their music shrouded and yet undeniably intense across a spectrum of emotions. Though delivered with the typically vitriolic tremolo picking and blasting that has become synonymous with Black Metal’s second wave, there is a huge display of introspective anguish in these rituals, a sort of sonic ego death if you will. Between these 2 new offerings upon the altar of occultist psychosis there is a cloaked dynamic that is superbly executed but on Black Cilice’s terms.

Noisy, raw, agonising Black Metal that will open a void in your spiritual wellbeing, this potent enigma of the Portuguese underground strikes once more with a short yet expansive burst of bleak, desolate destruction. Side A holds a far more barbaric performance while the B side is more carefully layered with sepulchral atmospherics and dirge-like melodies, which altogether leaves a potent concoction of intoxicatingly malicious ambience. None shall be spared.

Rating: 9 out of 10.
