All Hallows Eve, a time of wandering spirits, horror and glorious sounds. Hells Headbangers present their second “Spooky” split with 2 of their most unique bands. Out on, well, the 31st October of course. Read my review of the 1st instalment HERE.
Crunchy guitars and synths alongside pounding drums bring that haunting Acid Witch groove into life with the 80s horror soundtrack style still as present as ever. The riffing has a more traditional delivery while the gnarly demonic vocals bring the deathly evil into the mix. It seems that Acid Witch have decided to become a touch more experimental adding more of the psychedelia and dissonance to their Death-Doom Metal oddities. A brilliant opening track that is as catchy as it is creepy and serves as a memorable beginning to this years Halloween soundtrack. Vaultwraith ramp up the Heavy Metal side of things with a biting opening riff to their first song atop snappy drums which give the maniacal vocals a backdrop of total ferocity. Blasting forth into total carnage, there is a certain violence and frenzy which complements and contrasts Acid Witch’s crawling morbidity gloriously. Side A is a success.
Moving on to Side B, Vaultwraith are up first this time. With the more traditional Extreme Metal sounds that take a huge amount of blasting drums and venomous riffing, plus some face-melting lead work, there is more of a feisty energy to Vaultwraith’s songs which give the up some drive to counter the macabre creeping of Acid Witch. The meaty riffs and punchy drum beats conjure some vile apparitions of doom as the vocal performance drifts into a wonderfully possessed howl to spew incantations upon the instrumental fury. Finishing up with Acid Witch’s 2nd offering for the split, opening things with some sampling before thrashing riffs surprisingly up the ante with a more intense style of deathly Heavy Metal. Acid Witch seem to have decided to put all of their less typically “them” ideas into this split which show some interesting and killer perspectives of the band that we do not often see. A devastating end to the EP, completing the vast range of moods and sounds in a mere 13 minutes marvellously.
A wonderfully spooky split of 2 killer bands who bring something different to the table but work in unison to deliver the sounds of horror with a concise but extremely enjoyable little EP. Frantic, creepy and undoubtedly a perfect soundtrack to the season (which should be all year), it is time to unearth the charred, skeletal remains of this horrific entity.
