ALBUM REVIEW: Abscession – Rot Of Ages

Swedish / German Death Metallers ABSCESSION are back with their 2nd album. Set for release via Transcending Obscurity Records on November 19th.

Grinding chainsaw riffs blast us into a riveting avalanche of morbid riffing and fearsome drum work which has some insanely intricate fills to punctuate the HM-2 assault. Gut-wrenching vocals spew atop the venomous instruments to create a crushing conjuration of pure Swedeath might. The way this album just jumps right into the good stuff, no teasing or pretence is commendable, showing that sometimes it is just best to lay your cards on the table. Blistering solos give a melodic flare to the music but are often short-lived which works well in terms of keeping the monolithic grooves intact. Punchy hooks are utilised gloriously to make sure as the songs lurch from strength to strength, attention is retained on this headbanging massacre. Sometimes it seems almost to fast of a progression which leaves little headroom for the riffs to develop which can be unfortunate, but this is thankfully recompensed by the sheer amount it superb ideas on show. Overall, a very strong start to this rotten opus.

Descending further into the crypts we hear a gorgeous development of the melodic side which gives a flourish of flamboyance to the Death Metal carnage while thankfully not overshadowing the brutality of the record which remains a focal and cutting example of Swedish Death Metal, the old school way. This album is definitely going to be one of those where fans of this sound love it, and condemners of the HM-2 will want to stay away. That said, these guys infect their music with elements of Gothenburg-esque melodies and also some spacey doom-tinged moments which break up the d-beats and ripping guitars to give a bit more diversity to the music, if remaining somewhat in their comfort zone. One complete contradiction to this statement is “Rot Of Ages” which can only be described as a sort of Death Metal musical number that employs more theatrical panache, this addition may seem completely random but is oddly enjoyable and a really brave move that works strangely well in the context of the LP. At the end of the day, this album gives us what is promised, ripping Swedish Death Metal. If that appeals, get ready for one hell of a ride. If it doesn’t, head back to my home screen and find something else! My stance, respectable and savage worship of one of my favourite sounds which deserves attention.

Here is a brilliant example of an album that sticks to the ways of old, gives it some flare but ultimately pays homage to the greats in a respectable and enjoyable fashion. As a lover of Swedish Death Metal I cannot flaw the musicianship, songwriting, sound or execution at all. Realistically, we have heard a lot of this style, so originality might not be the key focus but that doesn’t devalue the magnificent cut of Death Metal on display here, which is definitely worth a blast for the old school maniacs.

Rating: 8 out of 10.
