A new entity of traditional Heavy Metal has arrived in the form of a duo called PHANTOM DESTRIER. Their debut demo is out now.
The trilogy of tracks begins with melodic riffs and raunchy bass that immediately start the demo out with an anthemic quality as slightly husky vocals join the mix with the tight drum beat that gives the sound a Speed Metal touch. Powerfully driven, the primal yet catchy rhythm has a fearsome drive while the melodic side of things makes the songs hit in a way that has tasteful appeal to those seeking late 80s Heavy Metal with a slightly feisty edge. Between the grooving verses to the more ethereal choruses, the variety on offer here is impressive and is tied together by some stunning lead guitar work, that takes a simple approach to giving bluesy sleaze to the tracks. The second track slows down and gives a more gruff and hazy sound than the first, where some of the energy dissipates into a more staggering piece. This works gloriously in the middle, as the last song brings that galloping ferocity back for one more round of pure NWOBHM worship. Galloping guitar and chunky bass lines top a mountainous drum performance before melodies and stunning leads kick us back into the high-octane hellfire that the opening song offered. Closing with a triumphant and monolithic slice of steel, it really does make one hope for more from Phantom Destrier and their brilliantly DIY Heavy Metal that is performed with passion, grace and undoubtedly high quality. Finishing on an instrumental track was a bold move, that paid off thanks to their talented and diverse approach, bowing out with style.
This demo does an excellent job of walking the line between Heavy and Speed Metal with tons of great ideas. The musicianship is tight, the lyrics work and most importantly the feel is all there. I think the opening song shows the bands potential best, which is certainly strong, there is plenty in the future for this duo. As is usually the case with a first demo, some refinement and precision in direction is needed, but realistically, only a touch as this thing rocks.
