The stench of underground Death Metal from CEREBRAL ROT is wafting back into the air as they triumphantly return with their 2nd album. Out via 20 Buck Spin on June 25th.’
Gloomy riffs storm into life with a creeping, fetid soundscapes that immediately brings in those gruesome atmospheres the band conjured so wonderfully on “Odious Descent Into Decay”. The cavernous guitars and thunderous drums bring a booming low end monstrosity to life as the putrid vocals join them with equally disgusting delivery. Abyssal songwriting groans with a thick reverberate and swampy mix that accentuates the bands dripping sound and morbid crawling music perfectly. Betwixt swaying, grooving sections we see some tremolo picking that still retains a more eerie feeling while the guitar solos add a more chaotic and frenzied feeling with some killer whammy dives. Truly a disgusting return, one of magnificence that will immediately remind people who know Cerebral Rot why they are so brilliant, while new fans will be putrefied by the brutal cacophony of rot that shall befall them.
Howling from the bowels of hell, the monolithic pounding onslaught continues to deliver blow after blow of skull-fracturing heaviness that is slow, brooding and otherworldly, with such a richly grotesque tonality across the board that it shall rot any speakers that play such unpleasantness. Aside from those Death-Doom style sections that the band concoct perfectly, we do get some blastbeats and faster riffing that are used to grandiose effect, launching an assault of offal into the ears before returning to their more mid-tempo stomps. This dynamic is one that has been consistent on all of the bands material and really gives the music the feeling of a coffin heaving open to spew sepulchral rot upon anyone in the vicinity. While perhaps it does not seem the band has reinvented themselves since the previous album and interspersing EP’s, I cannot really complain when they offer such marvellously daunting and odious music.
Perhaps some of you may associate slower tempos with a lack of engagement factor, but this could not be less apt. Cerebral Rot will have any headbangers destroying their grey matter with the whiplash grooves carefully places throughout this album before the maniacally macabre hammering of drums and sonic spew of riffs conjures the foulest of atmospheres to entrance you. This is truly a repugnant and malicious record that stays true to the bands style while offering us 7 fantastic new songs of crypt-crawling brutality. Merciless grooves, pulverising blasts and eldritch doom meet in a triage of utterly fatal savagery that will surely grip all Death Metal maniacs as they leave their tombs for a dose of Cerebral Rot.
Cerebral Rot are back with a splendidly malodorous and vile new offering that will rot the Death Metal underground with its supremely swampy and visceral deformities of pure morbidity. Allow yourself to be consumed by the reeking excellence of “Excretion Of Mortality” and feel the ooze of purulence leave your body as the Death Metal carnage dominates all in its path. -9/10
