Swedish Melodic Black Metallers Åskog return to follow their debut demo “Varg” with a brand new full length. Out via Grind To Death Records on May 12th.
Punchy drums and melodic riffs bring in a rhythmic and catchy beginning to the record without any wasted time, jumping right in as they mean to go on. Drawing on natural energies and ethereal yet bleak atmospherics, this is clearly going to be a haunting opus. The vicious guitars maniacally weave amidst the pummelling drum vitriol alongside some equally untamed vocals, delivering 2nd wave style Black Metal with skill and remorseless execution. Cascades of savage guitars work with a technicality that is neither obnoxious nor unnoticed, showcasing musicianship of high levels while keeping things well-suited to the violent assaults. Often when one sees Black Metal with nature in the artwork, it can be prophetic of boring reverb-drenched indie with screams, disguised as Black Metal with a lazy and tepid feel. Åskog on the other hand, actually have riffs, shredding solos, strong drums and potent vocals. All of these elements are invariably necessary to Heavy, and by extension, Extreme Metal as far as I am concerned. The first impression (excluding the demo, which was also great), is certainly one of impressive stature and growth.
We do see some dreary moods, it isn’t all blastbeats and barbaric riffs, but these moments of slower atmospherics feel rich and complement the sounds. This isn’t just some washed out snooze fest, this is the real deal. Nature of course is a well of inspiration for many, myself included, and should be a huge part of the life of all living things, so it is wonderful to see such a huge force being done its justice musically. The masterfully dark conjurations that take place on this record with the atmosphere being part of the Black Metal, not replacing it. A haunting experience can certainly be attained from the album when devoting ones attention to it, something in the air of potency that should always accompany Black Metal. The stellar musicianship and constantly evolving and interesting songwriting is magnificent to see, especially for their debut album. That said, fans of Murdryck will already know of the great music this duo can create, having improved many aspects with time too, this is going to be an album that many of you will appreciate.
A brooding and certainly atmospheric slice of prime Swedish Black Metal packed with melodies and aggression. If you enjoy Black Metal with rich melodies and atmospherics but no sacrifices made to the ferocity of the thing, then Åskog is probably the perfect balance for you. A fantastic debut album.
